Hey guys, I have always done this for cosmetic reasons. I have a QC-1 that I am considering getting ceramic coated. Any opinions? Aside from some degree of heat retention, do you think it would make any difference in performance? I am not sure on this one.

Supposedly you can get rid of the stock heat shields if you do coat the pipe (per Mtn Perf website) - that's the only advantage I've heard of.

This is ABSOLUTELY NOT reccomended!!!! I spoke to White Knuckle about this and they said no way can you or should you get rid of those shields even with ceramic coating....the potential for fire and/or melting is too high.

Interesting - here is the line from MPIs website "MPI recommends for additional weight reduction, ceramic/aluminum coating the system and eliminating the majority of the OEM heat shielding under the seat"

and the link -

http://www.mountainperformance.com/pipes.htm

I'm not saying that I have any clue what is right or wrong here - just passing on what I read.

Because less heat escapes from a ceramic coated pipe and the fact that a cermaic coated surface disapates heat faster i'd say you could remove all the heat shields

hmmmm :?: ...I think it's the way it reads. Note... they say the "majority" of shielding under the seat. I would be sure to have them specify this as the shield(s) in the tunnel are no big deal but the one where the storage compartment should be around the muffler  is the one that you CANNOT remove. Are there any up front around the gas tank? I wouldn't take them out either.. :?

Back to the subject at hand.....do you think there be be any "PERFORMANCE" gains to be had????

Under a car hood yes because it keeps the temps inside the pipe, a sled no. Save your money.
You also need the rear heat shield because that's where the seat attaches.

Last year near Tower MN we came across a 03 RX1 that had caught on fire. It looked as if most of the heat sheilding had been removed and may have the cause of the fire. I beleive it was a ceramic coated exhaust.

Heat sheilds, why take a chance. :itchy:

That photo scares me. Please don't tell me thats a bender turbo under all that mess. Thats my greatest fear with the turbo is an oil line cracking and spray oil on the turbo. Expessially when I what to ashpalt race mine, and no snow up there to do some cooling.

If you call Mtn Perf, they will tell you that the shields under the seat cannot be removed wit hthe ceramic coating, and that they don't see any need to have the pipes coated, as gains are not worth the cost... I am running my Qc-1 this year without the shields on the track side

The sled we saw was red and the fire started just behind the gas tank. The whole seat was pretty well gone before they got the fire out. It happened at a road crossing and a car drove up with a fire extinguiser and put the fire out.

The rider said flames came out near his groin while he waited to cross a road. He was running 80 or so for quit awhile on hard pack with very little snow cooling.

no one said to take the heat shield that attaches the seat to the sled off. that's a no brainer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually....you did

RXWonder: Come on. did I give you an exsample of how to reattach the seat when you removed that heat shield. See this a is the problem with people. I didn't realize I had to list each heat shield and say remove or not remove. I figured common sence would prevail on that.

You know I have no exhaust running out the back on my turbo RX-1 but the that heat shield is still there because it holds the seat in place.
