I took my old ripsaw out because im changing to a NEW cobra track..

Should i change the chain? or leave it.?

It has over 7000 miles on it..

Do i need to change the gears also like you do on motorcycles when you change the chain?

Thanks

Brian

chain

give chain a good inspection if links are tight, and wear is ok then it's
probably ok. but if you hole shot alot maybe you want to replace.

I have had to adjust the chain every year(so the chain has streatched quite a bit)

But the links all seam tight and the gears are not rounded

With 7000 miles a more agressive track and the fair amount of stretching you exsisting chain has expirenced I would just change it out. I've seen a chain skip and act up from being streched to far. Basically the chain pitch changes and it won't work. Worst case senario is that it jumps a tooth and takes out the case. With the warrenty ending and new track, you've already go it apart. Spend the $100 and not worry about it.

I agree with the above, a snapped chain could destroy your chaincase to pieces. A chain is much cheaper than replacing a s_ _ t load of parts!! Plus no worry of having to get towed home.

No I dont think so, if your gears arent showing signs of wear then dont worry about it, I know many that have changed only the chain with no probs.

No a sign of a worn chain is gears that are C cut. In other words if the chain is stretched and used and you keep using it the gears or the chaincase are going to pay for it whether the chain breaks or not.

I try to change my chain every 6000 miles and typically change the upper gear at the same time too.

If the gear looks very good you could run it, but I'd definitely consider changing the chain.

I've actually put 8000 miles on my 07 Apex RTX with the original chain, but it and probably the gear too will be changed before next season.

Although not on Yamaha's, I've broken several chains over my sledding years. When they go, they take out the entire case, both gears, the reverse mechanism, the idler gear, the bearings, etc. The last one cost me about $600 in parts and a lot of that was used parts.

Ever since then I've gone with the 6000 mile (10,000 km) rule (except this year I pushed it a little...).

Brian, I too vote to replace the chain. I have seen first hand what the chaincase looks like when one comes apart. I have similar mileage on my 07 attak GT and will be replacing the chain and track and chaincase bearings this summer. Avoids trouble down the road :o| Regards, Chuck aka michmobiler
