I changed chaincase oil, without removing cover, I loosend locknut and tightend finger tite like manual says and tightend locknut again. How tight is finger tight, I can do it pretty tite or not so tite, oh ya, and back it off 1/4 turn. Be better if there was a torque value for this...
When you start feeling it push on the chain back it off a 1/4,you do not want it real tight it puts strain on the bearings.
Has he said... just back it off a little.
It's always a good idea to get your hand on the chaincase after a first good run once you have swapped the oil & reset the chain tension. Should be warm...not burning.

Never liked doing it this way either, if Yamaha's chain cases were as easy to take apart as my XLT is, I would be doing it that way as well.
Speaking of my XLT, when I did tighten my chain with the cover off it was surprising on how tight one could get it just by using your fingers!
I am not the biggest dude out there so if what I thought was finger tight to me would probably feel loose to someone much bigger than me.
Next year, the chain case cover is coming off no matter how difficult it is.
