Do all follow the rule that you just turn by finger the chain tentioner ? Stop when you can turn no more and then lock nut it sucure . Or do you leave it looser than that ?
I have a 23T gear while gives more chain slack. But I certainly don't want to rob power by increasing the chain radius.

When you say finger tight, are you saying as tight as you can go with your fingers then back off 1/4 turn or do you mean when you feel resistance then back off a 1/4 turn?
I tired this on my XLT and you can get it pretty tight by just using your fingers, even backing it off a 1/4 left it still too tight.
