Hi guys!

I am having some issues figuring out wether my chain is too tight or not.

I do not have a whining sound at all when I hit the throttle or keep it at a constant level, but when I let go of the throttle ecpecially going down a hill (engine brake) I hear this whining sound, I guess it is coming from the chaincase. Is this normal? It is not very loud or ugly, just a whining.

My Nytro now has 670km on the clocks, on my first ride I hit a rock and cracked the chaincase, rode 200kms without oil on the chaincase (didnt notice the crack).

I then replace the chain, upper gear (went from 22 - 18teeths) and the little reverse gear. The lower gear didnt seem to be that worn from the riding without oil and it was also very expensive so I didnt change it. While I was at it I also changed absolutely all of the bearings in the chaincase.

Since I rebuilt it I have changed the oild three times, 3rd time today.
There was lots of metal particles in the oil, I find it strange cause on the second change there wasnt that much, but I had only ridden 50kms on that oil. 150km on this oil.

So the metal particles in the oil worries me and I also wonder about the sound.

I dont want to wrench the sled to death.. .

Hmm

Holy crap why would anybody continue to ride with a noise like that coming from there sled. It reminds me of my buddy with there apex. It would pop out gear in reverse and grind and he kept doing it like it was going to fix its self. Painful to watch. Sorry to get off topic. Maybe have to replace the gears and chain??

Something is very wrong in your case! Have someone qualified analyze what's going on. I would advise you not to ride with this condition. It appears something is rubbing or you may be missing a spacer/washer and your chain is out of alignment. This is not normal by any means..

I think the previous guys might be thinking that you do have the noise in the video but you are saying that you don't, right? I ran my chaincase dry and, as you probably know, I only heard a noise on acceleration- not during engine braking. I replaced the top gear and chain only and it's been fine even though there were marks in the reverse and bottom gears. Is your chain tension good (finger tight and then back off a quarter turn)? Does it make any weird noises in reverse?

The whine under engine braking and regular braking is normal, however the particles in the oil is not and something is clearly not right in the chaincase, I would tear it apart and have a look ASAP!

I have a strange thought....is it possible you bent the driveshaft when you cracked the chaincase cover? Maybe just enough to have a little run-out at the gear? Just tossing out an idea....

Hi guys!

Thanks alot for the replies!

Nice to hear that the whine under engine braking and/or when braking is normal!

But I do still have the issue with the metal particles in the oil.

Crewchief47, interesting thought but it is not possible that the shaft is bent cause the rock slightly hit the head of the drain plug and made the cover crack at the "root" of the drain plug.

I`m starting to wonder if it is possible that the metal particles are coming from the lower gear that I didnt change?

I cant think of any other reason.

When thinking of how little torque you are able to put on the tensioner by hand I dont think a little too tight chain would produce that much metal particles?

Fingertight will vary alot from person to person and if it was that important they would have had another way to adjust the tension.

Tonight I changed dimebags upper gear from a 21 to 19, I was very excited when I drained his oil which had been in there for 1000km.
Oil looked much better then my oil but I could see very very small particles which is normal. I was the one who assembled his chaincase the last time (replaced all bearings) and I also tightened the chain, and I`ve tightened numerous of chains throughout the years, at home and also when I worked at the dealer, and never had a problem.

Gees what am I missing?

I`m considering to call my insurance and leave the sled off to the dealer and have them replace everything. However I have to pay 666$ to use the insurance. Hmm

Gees this bothers me, but I love the sled more and more.. .

Rock on.

whine

Just a thought, did you bend or crack something on the tensioner mechanism? Might appear ok to the naked eye but under stress it is not operating properly and causing an issue?

I had this happen to my nytro a few years ago.

I was wondering if you hit a bigger rock than you thought and it cracked the case and you hit it with one of the drivers maybe? If you bend the middle of the shaft, it will throw the end hanging past the bearing out as well. Just a passing thought.... I could be crazy too..... LaLaLa

Carry on!

Interesting thought, but I dont think so because the rock hit on the lowest point of the cover and the tensioner is way longer up on the cover so I dont think so. But you never know.

Crewchief 47 aha I see what you mean, I cannot gurantee it but I dont think something hit the drivers.

Today I called the insurance company and I also called the dealer, didnt seem like a problem at all to do it that way.

But I will ride this weekend and then drain the oil and use a magnet to find out wether the particles are aluminum or steel.

We`ll see.
