Going from 22t to 18t on upper gear, possible? URGENT!!!!!!

Hi guys!

As some of you may know I got a crack in my chaincase on my first ride on the new MTX 162, rode 20 miles without knowing about the crack (no oil in the chaincase). I replaced the cover and the bearings in the cover.

Rode 50kms and changed oil, lots of metal particles in the oil so I decided to change absolutely all the bearings in the chaincase and also the upper gear and the reverse gear cause they had some grooves from the chain.

Got a package with parts today from across the pond, I totally forgot that the gearing can vary from country to country.

My old upper sprocket is 22t and the one I got now is 18t. I got a new chain too which is shorter then my old one (fits the 18t).

The lower sprocket has 40t.

I checked the microfiche and it looks like 18t top 40t lower is the standard setup in US.


Now, can I ride with this setup? I dont care about top speed, never ride trails so it really doesnt matter.
Is the clutching all different from US / Europe?

I really wanted to get the sled upn running without having any worries about the chaincase.

Is this possible?


Would be really nice if someone could say something about this.

I think the MTX come stock with 20/40 gearing. Anyways I am running an 18T top gear with no problems. I am also running the stock chain.

Not sure how things come set up for over there. Hope this helps!

The standard for US '08 MTX sleds run a 20t top and 40 bottom. I am not 100% sure but i do I believe that the '10 MTX does come with the 18t top 40t bottom.

I believe most of the people in this forum that have swapped out their OEM track on the '08-'09 sleds have gone with either 19T or 18T top gear with no problems at all.

Not sure about the clutching side of things. I would have to image if you were running a taller 22t top and a 40t bottom gear ratio the clutching is a little different to work with the taller gearing. You may bounce off the rev limiter with your stock clutching if you try running the smaller 18t top and 40 bottom ratio without adjusting the chultching a little. From what i have read in this forum the shorter gearing works really well once you get everything dialed in. You will need to run the shorter chain of course with the shorter gearing ratio but it sounds like you already have the right chain to work with the shorter ratio gears

I am sure someone on here can help you out as far as what to do on the clutching side of thigns Good luck ;)!
 
I have never seen a change in my clutching when changing gearing. I must say I have never moved my gearing that much at once
 
Running the stock 20 tooth here with a 162. But then again, it came with that when I bought it. The previous owner thought the 19t was too low and since the 4 stroke has torque, no need to regear to a lower tooth. Seems fine so far.
 
18-40 is stock on high alt 162's. 22-40 is the low alt 153 set up 20-40 is high alt 153.

run it, if anything you will want to bump up to a 19 on top but it is the same chain from 18-20 with a 40 lower so if anything you will just be changing the upper gear if you decide its too low.

As already pointed out by others, the gearing is different in US vs Europe. Do not ask me why, but somebody at Yamaha Europe probably decided that the US low altitude spec was perfect for all of Europe...Anyway, in my opinion there is no drawbacks if you leave the 22/40 gearing for 20/40 or 18/40. If you are into tight and twisty riding or climbing, your clutches will spend more time at a ratio closer to 1:1 and thereby run cooler.
I have got only limited experience from clutching mountain sleds, but I know couple of guys that went from 22/40 to 18/40. They increased the preload on the secondary spring a little bit (to avoid over shifting) and they were also forced to add a small amount of weight at the tips to avoid over revving.

I called my dealer today and he told me that a Yamaha guy from the "company" had visited them yesterday and one of the subjects they discussed was the gearing of the MTX in Europe/Norway.

Way to high gearing said the guy, run the us gearing, much better!!

So in other words I will be ok, but they use another spring in the primary.

However they had a 20tooth sprocket so I will be picking that up today and fit it. Also he told me that the setup in the secondary was the same.

Mine started out stock in high elevation setting with an 18-40. I went to a 22-40 and liked it. I started drag racing a little (little backyard stuff) so I went down to a 20. Comes out of the hole better but I lost a little top end for sure. I might go back and play with the 22 tooth and see what I can do with it.
