Just a heads up for others riding in MI that apparently the police and DNR have adopted a zero tolerance policy for registration decal location on sleds. We came through Shingleton this weekend and got stopped for a registration check on the trail. I'm thinking it's not big deal because my wife & I both have valid MI registration and trail permits but the cop was a complete jacka$$ and gave me a ticket because my valid registration was installed in a non-approved location. I put it behind my feet on the tunnel (so it wouldn't fall off) rather than on the rough side plastic. I guess it's my own fault 'cause I knew where it should go, but give me a break. I would think a warning would be justified but apparently not. I'm not sure what the fine is for this terribly criminal act but I'll find out tomorrow when I call the courthouse. Anyway, if anyone else has their MI registration on the tunnel or anywhere other than where it's supposed to be, you may want to move it. Certainly would be nice if there was a better spot to put the registration decals on these sleds.
yeah i got told by the dnr once that my sticker was in the wrong spot too. Luckily he didn't give me a ticket and just said to get it moved asap. But like you say i but my wifes on friday and rode saturday and it's gone off one side already. They kinda suck! I see a lot of people making things to mount them to. I outta do something like that.

Yamadogger, Who issued the ticket? DNR officer or the local Township Police? If the Twp. Police, did he right the ticket under a local ordinance?

Schoolcraft county sheriff on a sled (a Ski-Doo no less). No local ordinance. He said the state was really cracking down this year on this particular issue.

I love it. Place the blame on someone else (the state). Nothing is further from the truth. State cracking down. No, Schoolcraft County cracking down and while their at it, double dipping on it too.
1) The county sheriff gets a portion of the State Trail permit monies.
2) The county sheriff gets a portion of the fine the court will collect from your ticket.
I am very upset at this. You just paid to have a deputy ride on the trail and stop you because of a sticker placement violation. Think about it.
Com'on. That deputies purpose is to provide a level of safety for the Sleding community. Alcohol enforcement, lost or injured persons, etc.
Sticker placement violation? Give me a break, or better, you a break.

sorry dude but you know the law! i do however agree that it is very hard to get the Michigan sticker to stick to the side plastic.

Michigan Snowmobile Association needs to address this issue. Newer sleds and the use of more and more plastic.
A piece of plexiglass 1/4 larger than the permit, heated to form to the body panel and riveed/screwed on solves this whole thread. I dont even bother riding in MI anymore

You, I and a bunch more realize that. But, understand there is a bunch more sledders that are not that resourceful.

Not just up there. Last year I heard a lot of riders down hear in Berrien County saying the same. But most of them got warnings. As far as the sticker goes (and now this time of the year I would do it inside if possible) take your registration and draw or mark where you want it to go on the panel. Take some scotch brite and tpi or similar plastic cleaning solution. [Takes the mold release off] and scrub in the marked area. When you are done the plastic will be very "dull" so don't go outside your lines to much. Laquar thinner will work also but do not use turpintine for it is oil based. Put your sticker down and rub it real good with a cloth. Then I take a hair dryer and get it warm and then as it is cooling rub it down again. I always get my registations in the spring so that when I do my summer storage and cleaning I put them on then.

A dab of clear finger nail polish on the four corners will help prevent it from peeling off too?

I've had good results cleaning the plastic with rubbing alcohol (I now use the prep cleaner that came with my ArcticFX decals). I then remove the panels and apply the registration stickers inside of my house when both the stickers and panels are at room temperature, and then I heat up the stickers with a hair dryer to activate the glue. This has worked well with all of my sleds with textured plastic side panels. I just replaced my old registration stickers last week and they were stuck on the panels nicely.
If you are doing any off trail riding, nothing other than the plexiglass has worked for me. My current reg sticker is almost cut in half and is still stuck on. Replacements are 5$ per set at the sos office

Picked up some motocross decal back sheets from the local dealer last year (I am sure someone can chime in what this stuff really is called). Stuck my sticker to the this black stuff, cut out around it and it sticks perfectly to the side panel. Not sure how it removes exactly, but it does help you place the sticker somewhere on the plastic side panels. This worked for 2,000 miles last year with the wisconsin stickers.

I sued to place mine on the bottom of the windshield, but now I put it right under the headlight, facing straight up. That way if I change or break a windshield it is not stuck on them. I had a cousin that got a ticket outside of Seney last year for having his sticker on the tunnel also. It was where his Mi dealer placed it on the sled for him when he bought the sled in Munising that year.
