Checking clutch alignment

How do I check clutch alignment, without the proper tool. It's an '07 RS Venture that eats belts every 500km's.

Place a flat bar across the back of the primary and it should be parallel with the secondary with about 13.5 to 16.5 mm space between the bar and the secondary. Make sure they are parallel!!
