What is the best way to clean the primary and secondary clutches on the yamahas, I was told to take them off and wash then with soapy water and rinse well, then blow out with an air hose. And not to use any lube what so ever. Is this correct?

I think you got a good answer. No lube, dry clean.( My opinion only.)

I agree, seems to me that crud would just stick to any grease and turn into a big mess.

Throw your clutches (both primary and secondary) into the dish washer. Put a little Dawn dish soap in there and run it through a few cycles. They will get very clean.

Ok, i've heard this enough times, so now i have to ask. Does this really work well? Or just easier? I have a hard time with BrakeKlean (sp) and a tooth brush, so i find it tough to believe it works great?Super Sled said:Throw your clutches (both primary and secondary) into the dish washer. I don't have a dishwasher anyways, but if this really does work that good, i'll find one!

I'm going to give the dishwasher a try once my parents go up to the cottage for a few days. Is it really just take the clutches off and run them the in diswasher and dry them out?

My wife would kill me if I used the dishwasher to clean snowmobile parts.

I tried the dishwasher on a spare clutch and was not impressed with the results.
The clutch came out of the dishwasher looking like it was covered in soot. Instead of a bright clean aluminum finish it now has a mat grey finish.
I will stick to using engine cleaner/brush/hot water and a blow dry.

wow can't imagine what the dishwasher looked like. Not to mention your wife
The dishwasher sounds like a good idea but to save a devorce settlement I will stick to the pail of soapy water.
Thanks for the replies guys.

If your using a dishwasher you need to use the proper chemical to clean aluminum. Powdered dish detergent destroys aluminum as it,s very high in alkaline.

Think snowtech magazine had a good article about this matter.

I think the secondary would have to be disassembled (remove the helix and shine it, etc.) to clean out all the crud and grease. Did not see much dirt in the primary at all but will have a closer look when I install new weights soon. Q-tips work pretty good as well in the grooves etc and I used engine cleaner which works well to break down the grime. There is a post on this topic in the Phz section as well.

I do my clutchs in the dish washer at least 1 time during the year. I always take them apart 1st and blow out the heavy material. I also use Dawn liquid dish soap and use the hottest setting.
