Clutch Issue Mystery

I towed a guy on the last trip and figured I ruined my belt. Went out today to change the belt and found both the primary and secondary with major damage. I can't figure out what could have caused this. Anyone ever seen anything like it? The fact that the primary and secondary are both damaged tells me it was from the belt, but I can't imagine what would have made the marks. The belt was super narrow but actually looked fine.

Was clutching stock? OEM belt? Mileage? Clutch in alignment?

Mine wasn't as bad but similar. I had a jack shaft bearing go south without realizing it and my assumption is that's the belt got loose and started to slip and make heat...essentially melting the clutch faces.

Stock belt. I run 2 speed weights. Just changed primary out with one that had under 1000 miles on it this year to freshen it up. Clutch is aligned per the bar I have.

Seen that before but a lot worse. A buddy of mine blew his belt at full throttle at around 120mph on his slightly boosted Apex

@steiner your buddies sheave looked like mine? The only thing I can think is the belt chunked off but I can't imagine it is hard enough to make those divots.

It looked like that but more. The gouges when all the way to end of the sheaves. I would say its from a blown belt.
On the positive side you now have an excellent excuse to get the clutches cut for overdrive.

I would look closely in the engine compartment cause you have something in there that has gotten into you clutch area. Could even be a ball from a bearing.

I agree.... I do clutching on the side and the only way those marks got in there is from a pc. of metal that is floating around there in the clutch area.

It looks like some pieces of metal got imbedded in the belt. I have never seen any thing like that.
Do the marks looked burnished? By that, do they look smooth?

looked at it closer tonight and man I can't figure it out. One interesting thing is there are marks even on the top of the secondary sheeve. It was like new when I started this year so they are from this as well. I agree something got in there, but it's odd it is on both sides of the belt and both the primary and secondary. @blade - The marks are deep gashes. Looks like I am on the market for a set of clutches.

Have you dismantled your primary and secondary clutches to see if anything has broke off? that looks like someone took a hammer and bet on it. I can't see a rubber belt doing that either

Maybe those ski-doo guys did it after our lake racing. I added a 60 horse shot of nitrous this year and it pulls away easily.

Post a pic of the belt
