I'm just wondering for you that follow it, who are the top grass drag racers with an apex and do you know who/what clutch kits they use. I'm not talking some back country racers, I want to know the big guns. I am interested to see when their kits come out and how they stack up against the guys that wait until there is actual snow to test their set-ups on snow versus grass.
Some of the back country farm boy clutching combo,s work pretty good! You would not want to trail ride a sled or make top speed runs on a kit that the top grass drag guys use. You might want to give Al Ulmer a shout(SRXSPEC)

But wouldn't you want to buy a kit from someone that does do good at the drags. I would think that they spent the time to figure out the clutching for grasss and would probably would do the same for snow. That is why I am interested in seeing who has the kits out now and then seeing if the ones that actually are tested on the snow are any better/different. I'm sure Ulmer does a fine job and is a great guy, I just believe from what I have seen that there is a lot to be had with actually testing on snow versus a dyno. I know bender, hauck and fix are all great racers/turners from the obvious reason, and I don't know much about Ulmer for the same reasons. Again, not knocking anyone, just not sure I like the idea of spending good money on something that hasn't been tested in the environment that it is suppose to be used in.

A race set up & good trail all-purpose set up will be different. A race set up would work horribly for trail riding & don,t go into powder...you won,t come out. Once you get the basics it is easy to do yourself. If you don,t feel comfortable buy a kit. They are better values now. I used to spend $500 on a kit & recieving about $200 worth of parts so I got pissed & learned how to do it my self. The kits now tho are giving you much better value. No secret here....clutch for target rpm,s & slightly lighten the tip for better backshift.

I understand that the two set-ups are completely different, but for those that buy the kits, wouldn't it make a better kit to actually test it on the snow, or can you make these kits from the shop without testing them. I know one racer that won't sell his until he gets snow to test it. He is pretty good too. I'm sure you have heard of Jerry Fix. It just seems if a guy like that won't release a kit until testing is done that there must be some more benefits and efficiency to actual snow testing then putting them on a dyno and selling the kits. Am I missing something here? I just find it hard to believe all these clutch kits that are out there now are going to be as good as the ones that wait until actual testing is completed. Is this wrong to think this way. I have always had Fix do my clutch work and have been completely satisfied, and his racing shows he knows how to do it on grass, and my satisfaction on the snow has been great. So I that is why I asked the origiinal question of the top racers and their kits and how they compare to kits now and later in the season. Thanks for your time on this. I have a general understanding of clutching, just have never had time to waste in the short seasons to justify trying it myself.

I think using a track dyno (spelling?) will allow you to maximize clutch efficiency. I think where the actual on hands testing comes is matching the clutching to traction, rider weight and other mods. If you blow the track underneath you, it may be slower then the stock setup! Can’t go wrong getting a clutch kit that has adjustments and customer service afterwards.
