I have a 07 Apex and experienced a code 12 briefly .... I change oil and triple check everything as I put things back together and started it to check oil and all is perfect..... few days later went to start it and it turned over normal but would not start and check engine light came on along with a code 12?? So I went over to the shop manual to dig into things spent some time reading and code 12 is a crank positioning sensor( is this correct?) and I am thinking wow this is the first time its ever had a hick-up?? Went to turn key just to ON to follow some directions in the manual and no engine light or code 12?? turn the key the rest of the way to turn it over and it started! A slight sputter then a smooth warm -up idle and everything is fine? Even took it for a spin and it ran perfect. Any thoughts anyone ? I did no other under the hood work at all.
THANKS Rich.

Sounds like your stator assembly is failing. There are 2 plugs that come out of your stator cover. Big and small. Small one goes to your crank position sensor. They are know to fail and leave you stranded. You can find them in the nose. You can check the resistance (can't remember the spec, around 480 ohms but would have to check) on the little plug but sometimes they intermittently fail, then work then fail hard. There's lots of literature on this issue out there.

I have spent hours going through the literature on site and cant believe how common the failures are. so I must have had my first warning to deal with it now. I also looked on line at the stator assembly and it has a superceded part number so things may have been improved? So its more than likely going to just fail for good? Just replace it now and go on down the road? I have the time and sled at home and not at camp it just makes sense. I will be doing the whole assembly not just the aftermarket position sensor. Found it online for a reasonable cost compared to local dealer cost....

This issue seems to happen a lot .chaging it now would be the thing to do, suck if it happened out away ..never heard this issue on a RX-1 ?? Thinking about changing my whole assembly to be safe .

How many miles does the sled have ?

10.500 on the sled. Its been flawless until this code 12 just popped up... never a hick-up. And as said after reading all the post of guys with the issue and its warning signs Iam lucky I have the sled home and its not failed out on a ride! I really hope the new assembly is improved over the original via different part #?

Ok . Wow ,same mileage i have. No issues yet , but I better change .on its way out I'm sure.. I haven't looked at the part numbers ,it's a different number ?

I talked to the guys a Port Yamaha they say the new part number is a improved product...... Back to your comment on the RX1 never having this issue I believe is because the RX1 never needed much stator output compared to the apex"s needs electrically....much different.

Mine went last season, 9000 miles. First big snow of the season went to start the machine and error code 12. Took me just under a month to get it, there was a port worker strike in CA beginning of this year my guess is this affected parts getting from Japan

Personally I think there is enough these failing that Yamaha should have done something about it. The amount of reports is clear they are defective !

12,000 miles on average and they are now 8-9 years old I guess if it were a 2 smoke you would be on your 3rd sled by now so i see why you think yamaha owes you something i guess...
