It calls for 93 octane according to the file in my bundle. The guy posted it was filled up with fresh 91... Non ethanol.... What I think the tune was advertised as requiring?
And was trail riding... And looks to not be a novice... Just saying

It’s correct that the 280race flash is rated for 93 octane for long wot runs. The 280race flash is not recommended to be used with questionable fuel.it has always been recommended to run at least 91 octane and is designed for trail-racing more so then long distance wot runs.we recommend the 270race flash for the long wot runs on 91 octane fuel

What is the cost for any updates to flashes such as the TD powertrail? I'm assuming if you wanted the latest and greatest version you'd have to send in your ecu for the updates. In my case my dealer Woodys Yamaha will be doing the TD powertrail flash tomorrow or Wednesday. If there is a update I wanted can I go thru them in the future? Can't wait to rip on it. The upcoming weekend is calling for even colder temps than we've experience recently with highs not even breaking zero. Are there any precautions to take with these flashes besides the obvious like proper octane requirements. I do like the fact the powertrail is tuned for 91 and us here and Maine are finding 93 octane vs 91 at a lot more stations. Some stations are even carrying nonethanol 93 octane this winter which is a plus. Berrys store in the Forks is one such station for any of you riding in that area.

question about that ben i had an update for the new max spool 17 for aftermarket bov. i have the upgrade fuel pump and map sensor with 3” race pipe and you guys told me to run C16 instead of 94 octane cause it run a little lean why ? cause i think with a bigger fuel pump suppose to have more fuel? That's not true... Thats why field testing is critical. We are running plenty rich with a stock pump stock regulator on the new TD max 17 which is extremely powerful. I was testing the new max 20 on a stock fuel pump 20psi two weekends in a row. Tons of power but now it's out of fuel...
I recommend a fuel pump above 19psi to be safe...

Nothing runs with water
Usually gas is better
There have been tons of 1100s go down in the up and anything else for tht matter
Crappy gas and anything will blow
I ride up there and there are some pretty questionable places
I have run 280 race on 91
I'm out of throttle by 800 ft
It's not a tune to hold for a long time
In the flash bundle it is called a 93 Oct tune
I wouldn't run wouldn't run anything over 240 without upgraded fueling
That's my opinion

Don't know the FB posters fuel fill ups. But I know last time I was going to the lake of the clouds our group was kind of handcuffed to get fuel at the Black Bear Lounge. Only offering was 87. Needless to say the store was selling a lot of bottles of octane booster.

Would a working knock protection system saved this motor?
I saw the original post on FB and now it had been removed.

sure couldnt hurt...
yes...we all who have had and seen this know the game and the machine...many do not and are just learning and impressionable...
makes my stomach sick to think of anyone on any machine losing a trip or motor...
the extreme cold weather tests the limits for sure..
lets all stick together in the turbo sleds!

Imo 280 race is overkill for trail riding anyway. However once the knock system is finalized this may help save an engine. Why not just clutch around a 260/270 tune and be safe?

I had no intentions of having this thread so we can all hold hands and sing kumbaya around the campfire, nor was this initiated to bash anyone under any circumstances.
That being said, I (and others) have interest in knowing and hearing about what works, what needs improvement and what doesn’t work.
This is the second year for the sled. And with that, we are all learning what the limitations are, and where we need to apply caution.
We didn’t have the nasty cold weather we have now during last season. We also didn’t have the tune development and advancements we have in such short order (the hard work of all tuners is simply amazing - it is truly a passion).
For me, I tune everything I own and definitely test the limits accordingly. I also know that I may be walking a fine line and disaster could rear it’s head at any time. I’m fine with that, and for many, the same applies.
I love the sport and believe that the SW is the very best sled on the market today. Nothing comes close (even with the cockamamie crap issues that get posted on this site. It’s all good information, but a lot of it is chicken$hit).
I’m not an advanced gear head by any means, but I like Performance and I’m always looking for the very best parts, components, accessories and mods to bring my sled and experience to the next level.
Soooooo...other than a blatant mix of cheerleading (hey that’s fine too, I’m a Leafs fan, GO Leafs), I think we can all be big boys (and gals) and continue providing and reviewing information on the sleds so we can continue advancing the sport and experience and provide others with some knowledge.
What are we learning here? It’s a mixed bag of tricks, so do your research and ride and procure accordingly. Some watch CNN, some watch Fox, others form their own opinion. At the end of the day information is key and critical, but it all comes down to deciphering the fact from fiction and making an informed decision.
Cheers!

This and no motor is bulletproof
I ride up there. Next time you test mix a gal or two of water in your gas and use that.
That is up gas in alot of places.
Being cautious is a good thing with any big tune
Of course no motor 100% "bullet proof" but the 998 has proven last season to be very reliable. I agree with using caution, and rating map requirements higher to ensure a safety factor. If you get bad gas full of water, well that can and will cause damage no matter what the tune.
But in reading this description, some people with less experience with turbo's, and especially boosted turbo's would fill up...and have at it.
"sidewinder-thundercat 280 race flash
This is our most popular flash. This flash makes the same hp as the 280 trail flash but spools the turbo fast for instant throttle responce. This flash improves gas mileage on the trails and makes agresive power. This requires 91 octane minimum as well as a exhaust system and clutching"

I agree with you. I don't care what the tune is it's going down.
That has been changed to 93 Oct. It's rated on flashes in the tuner.
The gas is bad up there
This is why I test on my own with straight 91 because where I ride it's not always going to be that high. Flasher is great so you can turn hp down and the new stuff with knock detection will help. What I've seen so far on my own with that it's pretty neat.

What we really need is for GAP to get their update done for the knock system!
Anyone that thinks they can push these things hard on unknown fuel quality in the UP, or anywhere for that mater without knock control should get a better education.
If you don't know the fuel quality, you had better stick to a 240 tune for trail use with any full throttle operation without an operational knock system. Only way to go is to add some race fuel concentrate to every tank if you want to know your safe running the big tunes. Never know when you're getting 87 or even 85 octane, which I know happens even through the pumps says 91 in the UP. Seen it first hand.
Hope is to have knock detection soon, so stuff like this does not happen.

The Facebook post was mine. I took it down because it got way off topic and I was sick of my phone going crazy. It was 91 octane non ethanol fuel not bar gas. I hauled it to Bergland with a full tank of fuel and rode to Lake of the Clouds from there(on the same tank). This flash was done at a dealer along with the exhaust and clutching. I did not ask a question in my post nor did I bash anyone, I was simply venting about my shitty trip and making awareness. I called the dealer this morning and was calm and listened to what they had to say. I have raced and pushed the envelope on engines before and know the risk. It sucks that it ended up like this after 1 day of riding but #*$&@ happens. And as far as long as WOT runs that did NOT happen at all!! There were so many sleds up there and poor trail conditions that WOT was not happening. Also we off loaded in Bergland on the North side of the Lake... So no WOT lake runs either. Would have been fun though to see what she could have done because it was a beast up to that point.
