BUT!!!!..... judging by the slam I've gotton on my posts by the "know it alls" you'll prolly be next for the punches & kicks. Good luck is all I can say.
Thanks, and I'm not expecting any punches or kicks.
LB doesn't need me to defend him, so I'm not going to. I will say that there are literally hundreds of people on this forum that have benefited from his advice. I'm sure I've learned more from him over the years that he's learned from me...

theCATman said:Well then sir, you're getting raped up the #*$&@ really bad for a simple oil change. I hope you ask for lube on you too, along with lubing the sled.
I do pretty much all the maintainance on my toys myself. I'd suggest you do the same especially the oil changes. Know how much my oil changes cost me on my sled?? $25 TOPS!! 4 quarts of Mobil 1@ $4.59 each & 1 filter @$5.99 plus tax.
You state you average 4-5k per season. The average 2 stroke sleds burn a gallon of oil every 500-600 miles @$40/gallon for good oil, not Wal-Mart $hit. So.... you'd need at least 10 gallons to get you thru your average season. My math comes out to $400+ 2-stroke oil VS $50-70 assuming an oil change every 2,500k. This is doing it yourself.
I never said you had to change your oil every 1,000 miles. I said I do!! You get more miles per season than I do. I get 1-1.5k per season, so I change mine once a year. Yamaha reccomends an oil change every 2,500 miles or once a season, which ever comes first. I did state that running it way over on service intervals certainly isn't doing the engine any good.
So if you want to call names & throw insults from behind a computer screen tough guy, I guess I am "THE KING OF MONEY"
Lazybastard.... oil certainly does break down & lose its lubricating abilities. You 100% right about forming sludge. That's when the oil is breaking down & not lubing properly.
I have seen many, many engines that have been neglected as far as regular maintainance is concerned, but I'm sure you're not interested anyhow. You guys just keep running your high revving, high load engines overdue on services & cry me a river when it wears out prematurely.
Now that I hope I'm done defending my opinions & facts, back to the original issue. Find a better mechanic & get the valves relashed.
Call names and throw insults? What are you talking about?

Hi All
The dealer figured out what is wrong with this 3cyl. They are not indestructible!
The exhaust valve sleeves are worn real bad, in an oblong shape. The exhaust valves are cracked real bad, with chunks burnt off a couple of them. The exhaust valve seats are enlarged, as if the valves were hammering against them. Yamaha is coming good for all the parts. I'll only have to pay for the liquids.
Problems started around 3000miles ago, and the engine was still running, barely though. Yamahas technicians and service rep says that it looks like the engine was real hot, and driven wide open for a very very long time. They also admit that you couldn't find a place long enough to run it wide open for that long, to do that kind of damage.
Has anyone else seen this kind of damage?
Thanks for all the ideas gents.

Glad the problem has been found, and yamaha is helping you out with parts.
How many total miles on this motor?

All those issues were probably caused by tight valves.Valve gets extremely hot if it cant close all the way.Glad they are covering it.If they are the ones who adjusted valves in first place when they are done fixing it I would take it somewhere else for a valve check just to be sure its done right.

Roger,
Glad to hear Yamaha is providing the fix.
You just happened to be the lucky one to experience a very rare event.
Next thing I would do is go out and buy a lottery ticket. You just might win! LOL...

qwerty, I know its difficult for you to accept that a Yam 4-stroke can mess up, but ALL machines can break NO MATTER WHAT. I don't see any reason to believe that he's just bashing. In fact, the explanation given is quite good and technically quite feasible.
Now be nice and don't worry about conspiracies. The Moderators will deal with any conspiracies.

I know Roger and yes, he owns a Venture GT.
He has come across quite bullish here on TY, but I assure you, he's on the up and up...just extremely frustrated with the problems that he has experienced. He's really just a little Teddy Bear in person.

I don't blame him for being bullsih, if I was having the problems that he is having I would be worse.. Can't understand how one machine has all these problems and another not one..I know there are lemons out there but man talk about shitty luck....Hope once it's fixed you get a better experence from it . Good Luck Roger

The valves have never been touched. It must have been poor quality parts from the factory, because it ran perfect for the first 3000 miles, and just kept getting worse. I'll ask if they touched the valves at it first 500mile check-up. If they have, you are absolutely right about getting it double checked somewhere else.
