Just got back from a week up north. 05 RX has has CRP's kit on it since new...no problems. I noticed the last day that if I was WOT on a long straight and let off it would backfire once. Sometime worse than others but it seems to be getting worse. Where do I begin? It does seem as though I am losing performance. Raced a stock Apex and top end he was pulling away. Out of the hole we were pretty even. Seems like my RX used to be quicker...
So what should I be doing to "tune this kit up"? Sled has about 6500 miles on it now and I did just buy new clutch springs, I plan on cleaning the filters, I did clean the carbs & clutches before the trip but did not sync them (no tool)
I also have a gurgle at 5-7K in the midrange. Where do I go with that?
I did run my track tighter than normal this trip BUT it greatly helped with hyfax wear, so maybe I lost some top end due to that. I know my SRX glides forever after I let off the throttle...and the RX really slows down...even at lower speeds where this is not a lot of backshift. All skid bearings are new.

Sad part is I really enjoyed riding my SRX a lot more on this trip than the RX-1. With premo flat as a pool table trails all week, that SRX hands down is the best handling sled I have even ridden. I wish I could get this RX to handle half as good as the SRX! Seems like when I get back on the RX after riding the SRX I am all over the place and ski lift is horrible! I planned on riding the SRX a day or two and found myself on it almost all week. I'm losing interest in my RX fast guys...Help me enjoy this sled again...

Thanks for any advice!

symptoms sound the same as apexes with bad exhaust donuts, backfiring and loss of performance. at 6500mi. its probably time to check. running the track tight will kill the top speed. its hard to find any sled that can handle a smooth flat trail like an srx, low and stable. the bad part is most trails are not always smooth and flat, and thats when the 8 inch no-action skid pounds the crap out of you.

I agree with grader. Also check the filters are sealing around the carbs. Sync the carbs. Hows your suspension set up in the front. I can get my RX to corner realy well. BUT its no SRX. Hands down the best groomed trail machine I have ridden

Also, check your spark plugs. What color are they? That will tell you how the engine is running. More importantly, are they all the same? If one plug is lighter or darker than the others, then you have a start and you can start looking for a split carb boot or bad coil. The plugs should be a nice light brown color.

Thanks for the tips you guys. I was wondering about those doughnuts, I remember reading something on those. any tips how I go about checking those? What needs to be ripped apart to check them? Will I feel exhaust coming out if they are bad?
As far as the front end, I have it pretty much stock. Do I shorten the springs a bit or what? Now that I took a trip with both sleds I did not even want to run the RX. We rode the mid to eastern part of the UP and Mon, Tue, Wed, Thurs and Fri early it was incredible. We arrived on a fresh 15" and it was one of the best trips I have had in all my years. Conditions were premium. There is never a LOT of traffic over that way. Everyone seems to go west of Shingleton.
Riding the RX was almost on the edge of out of control at times when it would tip etc...It was really pissing me off.
What do I do to get that thing to stay planted. I ran a fresh set of 6" carbides and it was almost like it was too much. I could not get any push out of the thing. I did suck the limiter strap up one notch for more ski pressure last season because you could not steer the thing out of the turns with the kit on it. It was lifting bad. Still does a bit. Kinda a point and shoot sled...
I'm not wanting to dump a lot of money on Ski's and sway bars etc...
I'm seriously thinking of selling it. It's been a great sled, but I'm thinking I may like the Apex ride over the RX. I know this sled though and can work on it. I looked under the hood of an Apex and cringed in comparison. I would like to give the RX one last shot.
Suggestions on the handling are appreciated!

First you need the longer sway bay links and the 13mm sway bar from Pinoeer performance. The you must have the strait rate springs. Another must. The set the spring preload on the shocks with the front end off the ground to just touching the spring. Loaded on the ground the A arms should be parrallel to the floor. You can get that sled to handle close to an SRX but it will never be the same. Higher center of gravity

Yeah black 1000. I know it will never be the SRX...but either I have to get this thing to handle better or off it goes. I was hoping I did not have to be changing front end parts, For the dough these sleds cost you would think we would not have to be buying different springs and sway bars.
So what am I looking at cost wise for all this?
Guess I'm off to look at Pioneers site...

I've got 2 sets of strait rate springs. For the sway bar and links you will have to contact Pioneer. He also has the springs

So do you sell the springs or just happen to have a spare set?
Let me know how much. Looks like the springs are $90 and the bar is $90 also. Says on the site that the stabilizer links are $63 but for use with the stock sway bar or their 11 MM bar only???

Dont you have an 05? The sway bar links only needed to be changed on 03,s.Im not 100 % positive but the 05 allready have straight rate springs.I think 04 ,s have the straight rate springs as well.

What i found on my mono shock suspension.Suck the front limilter down all the way.And lower the front springs 5 turns. And a 13mm sway bar.My sled handles much better than when I got it new.

I left the transfer rod set out in the middle of the adjustments. From a dead stop or slower speeds it still picks the skis but when cornering at faster speeds the front end pretty much stays planted.

Shows how much I know...
Yeah it's an 05...so I guess I don't need the springs???

So when you sucked the limiter all the way up did it become a bear to steer when at slow speeds (parking lots etc...)
I sucked mine up one notch and in comparison to my SRX it's like tuning a tank. When you say lower the front springs, you mean compress them 5 turns or lengthen them 5 turns?

Thanks!

I have an 05 and an 03 and if you want it to out handle the SRX take the skis, sway bar and shocks and sell them at a swap meet for what ever you can get.

Put on either Simmons flex skis or USI triple threats $400, Ohlin shocks $550, 13mm sway bar $169. Pull the limiter strap down one notch from the top set the transfer rod about half way (depends on your weight the more you way the less transfer you want) set the shock on the middle notch for 200 lb rider (higher for more weight) and set the tunnel control knob to middle to start.

I know $ 1050 is a lot but you have a sled that when set up properly has longer legs can handle any trail rough or smooth and you'll find yourself riding 350 miles a day and not needing a massage or hot tub and a bottle of advil. And with any luck she'll last another 10,000 miles with only minor maintenance & upkeep.

hmmm...thanks. I would really like to ride something like this set up before committing. I saw Pioneers sway bar was only $90.00. Where did you pay $169.00? Was it something different than Pioneers?
Where is the best place for the Skis and Ohlins?

The Ohlins are very nice but not needed. Sway bar and links are very improtant. Skis can be puchased any where. I am having very good luck with BRP pilots with 6" shaper bars

Sorry just flipped those off the top of my head but I think the links bushings and bar were $149 or $169 but don't bet on it. if it is cheaper thats less you have in it.
