Demoed Phazer towed home

Had a customer bring his sled back to me because he had oil dripping out the bottom on to the garage floor. He had next to no mileage on the sled, said he went for a rip down the road and then put it in the garage. I checked the oil level and it was below the "low" mark and the intake was full of oil. Thought we had major trouble judging by the amount of oil in the intake etc. After tracing the oil breather line I got's to thinkin' that hey!..."did you happen to roll the sled on your little down the road ride?" He said NO!
I cleaned up the intake, filled the oil and took it for a run and everything was fine. I'm positive it was due to being tipped over and would bet the customer probably had it on it's side in the shop. Lesson learned and at least he had the common sense not to ride it until he knew what was causing the problem.

If you block the airbox hose you'll be blowing oil out your engine seals. The hose puts a vacuum on the crankcase to prevent pressure build-up. This is called a Positive Crankcase Ventilation system on a car and they use a PCV valve in-line in the vacuum hose. I would think putting any in-line pcv valve in the phazer hose would reduce drainage but, really, there needs to be a trap. The oil tank is probably supposed to trap drainage but doesn't work well when the sled is rolled a certain way. A pcv valve is just a hollow aluminum tube with an aluminum "plug" that rattles up and down with vacuum pulses and is used to prevent sucking oil from the engine. If it were upside down it would close on the topside and reduce much of the oil drainage, though it would be far from airtight. The only problem I can think of is that pcv valves use straight manifold vacuum(the engine side of throttle plates) and the airbox may not have enough vacuum to work, but I think it would. I don't get my phazer till the end of this month, so I can't try this myself, but it would be simple to patch the hose if it doesn't work.

P.S. The plug in a PCV valve drops from gravity and rises with vacuum. You can hear and feel the rattling when the engine is idling(maximum manifold pressure) but the valve must be mounted vertically.

This is something Yam needs to fix right away. It will prevent me from really using the machine for fear of rolling it over and losing oil/fouling plugs etc. It doesn't make sense that it was done like this. Its like they forgot to finish it.
