Diehard Apex rider made the switch

After about 32,500 miles of riding an Apex (owned an 06 followed by an 08) I decided to make the switch to a Nytro.

The Apex is a great sled, and there is nothing like that four cylinder motor! I miss it already. Although, the Apex has it shortcomings when it is rode aggressively. With a ZX2 the Apex handles the bumps in the rear like no other, but there is no denying the weight in the front of that sled. I was also tired of the sloppy steering, exhaust breaking, reverse problems, and the seat ripping.

I am really hoping the Nytro will handle the bumps better and will hold up to the miles.

I found a Nytro with about 500 miles on it and did a fair amount of things to get it ready for my style of riding. A big thanks to the vendors here and many of the ideas that were posted by the members. Here is the list:

  • Transferred my ZX2
  • Added spare belt clip to the clutch guard
  • Stuffed the tool bag full of foam to help prevent the tools from ripping the bag like they have on my Apex's
  • Installed a Trail Tank
  • Transfered my HID lights
  • Transferred my Yamaheater
  • Installed Ulmer front end bushing kit
  • Transferred Curve skis
  • Installed Mountaintech skid plate
  • Installed hand guard covers
  • Installed accessory tunnel brackets

My biggest concern is missing the top end of the Apex. I have a couple miles on the Nytro and notice it already. Hopefully the bottom end power will make up for it.

The nytros do hit the wall a little earlier than you'd like buy they do keep climbing. My Xtx rockets to about 75-80 then takes a few seconds to reach 100, but it does get there and past. Nytros also respond well to power add-ons.

Make sure you buy a grizz gusset kit and weld up your sub frame while its still mint. Its cheap insurance to save a part that isn't that cheap and once it is bent its never the same

I also went from a 03 RX1 and noticed the top end right away, Miss it alot .... BUT, I love the Nytro absolutley a hoot to ride.. You wont miss the top end for long...

Holding off on the OFT kit until I put some miles on the stock setup. I know everyone says it is one of the best things to do to a Nytro but I want to try the stock setup first. I would love to do the gusset kit as well, but didn't feel like tearing it out. Maybe I will be a lucky one. Doubt it.... And there is no way I am buying an XTX, way too much track for me. Yamahinn03, I hope you are right!

the gusset kit for sure, everything else looks good, i had hy-gear do my shocks and springs well worth it. I came off an apex and am now on second nytro xtx much better for powder, tight trails, and bumps IMO. the nytro won't have the top that the apex does but if you're not a strick lake racer you won't miss it and their is alot of stuff out to get speed out of them

I also switched from Apex to Nytro because the Nytro is simply more fun to ride. Your right the Apex has more legs so I simply continue modding the Nytro. This year I have added boost and waiting to see how this improves my top end as I run with anything in 600 feet. We were supposed to get snow today and got a lot of rain!!! Heading to Madison on Saturday as I heard they got 15 inches.

I had an apex with a yamacharger and switched to a nytro with boost this year 100% of the time. How many lbs you running on your push to make up for the legs you miss on the apex? Had a nytro before my apex and wanted more power, but couldn't deal with the size in the twists.

Running 8lbs to start but I heard it can handle up to 11? I need to get it out and experiment but we have yet to get any white stuff )--:

I never had a gusset kit and I run hard,. I the time I also weight over 250lbs and never bent a thing. Riding buddy on XRS bent his NUN twice and finally wrote off his REV from riding. We to this day don't know what he hit

Nun is the front bulkhead (more or less) of the Rev's.

The sub-frame was one of the things that I actually didn't destroy, in the end the deal said it was very slightly out but you honestly couldn't really tell. As long as you don't hit anything (and I mean anything), land nose down on one ski, or any other load out of the normal it actually seems to deal with a pounding. Then again how can you keep from an occasional off camber landing.

You can beat on a nytro all day long and the subframe will be fine and then a random crack in a gas station parking lot or loading it on a trailer and catching the carbide on something and its bent. IMO a strait subframe should not be taken for granted. I'd rather spend money on mods than repairs. I still don't even know what bent my first subframe. 80 bucks for gussets instead of a 500+ dollar subframe... yes please
