I had one start to slip on my 05 RX1. It was the sprag seems like the spring stretched on it some how. Put a new used one on and problem solved. The only difference between the two was the tension on the sprag spring and its easy to tighten it up with just a few twists.

Yeah I'v been throught the "energy conserving " oil thing and read lots of posts on it. I made sure that the quakerstate 5w30 high milage is not energy conserving.
Only miles in the seat will tell if the oil consumtion will go down. I will keep you posted with updates.

Starter sprag is why Yamaha does not recomend energy conserving oil. The starter clutch runs in oil!
Interesting. I've only ridden 4 stroke sleds but not yet owned one. At some point soon I will probably buy an rs venture or venture gt. Do the 3 cylinders have the same setup?

I had a 2003 RX-1 , it used 1 quart every 400 miles , most of it was blown out the pipes , try a service goodwill with Yamaha , not likely but worth a try.

Don't have any real first hand experiance with Synthetic before sleds other then the one time my bud put 5-30 synthetic in his oil burning car. It burned even more oil then. It also started to weep more oil from every leak the dino was leaking from. He went back to 10W-30 dino and the oil burning went back to normal as did the leaking.
I think but can not back this up that synthetic is by its nature more flowable and maybe just gets past rings and seals if they are worn. Old mechanics told the same story!
I had a huge issue with Esso 10w-30 dino in the late 70's. My souped up 340 LA wedge drank it like water and smoked like crazy, so I switched to Castrol 10w30 and voila no more problem. Yet my Dad ran Esso 10w-30 in his 66 318A block with no issues! Never figured that one out! I just kept using Castrol!

Yes, that would be correct about synthetics dripping more than Dino oil. It would make sense that an engine that burns dino will burn even more synthetic.
I know many European automobiles are commonly burning a quart of syntyhetic oil per 1200 miles. And that's within spec per the manufacturers.

I must be the lucky 1. My RX1 MNT uses very little oil, 1 qt per 2100 miles. The 1st oil change was at 500 miles. Always used Yamalube, but at the 700 mile mark, I overheated this sled going thru Yellowstone National Park so bad, it was snapping and cracking as I was throwing snow all over it. I thought after that it would burn oil, but I was happy how it turned out.
