Disappointed

By opening up or freeing up the breathing of the beast you are actually making less suction at the airbox then stock so no that would not be it. Its a 03 they are prone to use some oil just let it use want it wants and enjoy the ride. I bet its more on how its rode more than anything else. Were you riding it harder than your previous 140 mile ride or tamer?

I know you have allready heard this but I have a 03 RX1 with a turbo on it and the only way you will stop using oil is to update your rings to 05 or newer. Even if you have to pay to get it done it is alot more fun rideing with out worrying about your oil level. break down update and enjoy

rotella may be one of the cheaper oils with no friction modifiers. Many use this in the quad industry. May be worth a look

Sled dog, I was actualy driving it alot harder on this ride than the 140 mile ride. I was driving it prety hard (like I stole it. LOL) this trip so maybe things loosened up a bit. Not sure what happened but it definatly used less oil so I'm happy.
I have come to terms with the add oil and drive it or replace the ring issue. I was just wondering why it burnt 1/2 less oil on the 225 mile trip than it did on the 140 mile one.

Just goes to show she likes being rode hard.

Why not try some of the high mileage car oil ?

Just an update to this old post.
As you may well know, I have the 03 rx1 and it has the epic oil consumption problem because of the rings. It used to bother me and I tried the ring free and all that hoping it would help and I finaly just sucked it up and just keep adding oil. I started with amsoil 0w40 and them mobil 1 0w40 and finally switched to quaker state 5w30 high milage conventional oil because it was cheap I was going to burn it up any way. The manual says to use 5w30 any way. I used to have to top up about every 300 miles, I have 250 miles on already this year and it's still on full. Not sure if this will keep up or not but I like the look of it so far. I know some of you will say that the grade or weight of the oil won't matter because of the ring issue but the dipstick doesn't lie. It will be interesting to see if this keeps up.

Thanks for the update. My 2011 on a 2500 mile trip last year had burned a quart of oil at around the 2200 mile mark. This was the first time, and I was surprised to see the oil light come on. Pulled the dip stick and sure enough it was low. I was running Mobil 1 0w30. I put it in again this year, but will keep an eye on it, and switch to another oil if needed.

This was the same result for my 03 used the 5w30 conventional oil and never drank a drop. It drank M1 0w40 like it was water had to add every 100 miles. Put 1000 miles once I switched to 5W30 conventional and never added a drop.

I have since sold mine so I dont have a long term update but keep us updated!

Sounds to me like everyone has diferent luck, I have been running Mobile 1 0W 40 for 3 years now in my 03, so far it consistantly burns about half a quart in 1,000 miles. I also run recommended amount of Ring Free in the gas almost every tank. When I picked up a new waverunner they said Yamaha is recommending to run that in everything because of the new fuels. Hopefully my luck doesn't change in the oil consumption department! The RX1 will do a lot of sitting this year, first season with the Apex!

Cool, that would be nice.

Maybe you ring free finally worked but I'm betting it is the coventional oil that is the difference. If you found an oil that works stick with it.

I always found with my Warrior that lots of hard running used more oil and easy running used less. Lots of hard wide open runs on the lake put more oil in my airbox and through the motor from there, because of combustion blow by and more oil mist in the crankcase.

Fwiw, motorcycles are not recommending the energy conserving oil because most motorcycles have wet clutches. Theres no wet clutch on an RX 1, so I can't see a reason why you can't use energy conserving oil. Unless I am missing something else?

Starter sprag is why Yamaha does not recomend energy conserving oil. The starter clutch runs in oil!
