DNF weight flat spot

Hey Guys,

I pulled the Drag and fly weights from my sled tonight and noticed that there is a flat spot on them. Or maybe it's better described as a slight indent the size of the roller.

I was thinking it might be from spending a lot of time at one rpm range but not to sure. What do you guys think?

It's hard to capture with a camera but if you look between the center and tip bolt locations (two upper) you can see the spot.

That is bizarre. My D&F's never did that. I'd call up Randy Nouis at HC and tell him. He may just send you out new arms.

Had the same thing happen to my stock weights on my 09 fx.Did a trip from fort kent maine to the gaspe in canada.1400 miles in 4.5 days.Ran in the 40 to 60 mph range during the trip and it wore the weights and also the primary sheeve.Noticed it in the spring when I was putting it away for the summer.
Had the 4 year warrany by spring checking the slad and yamaha replaced the weights and also both primary sheeves.Been fine ever since,7176 miles so far.

This is more common than you think. Especially on sleds that get a lot of smooth trail or lake riding at a constant RPM. I have a buddy with an F7 that burned a groove in his weights almost 1/8" deep from long trips on the Mississippi river. The sucky part is that there is no easy fix for that and keep them balanced. If you have them machined and reweighed, it's going to cost you more than a new set. :o|

I'll bet something is out of balance in your clutch. You may not notice it while riding, but something is amiss.

Just looking at the Drag and Fly Ramps, and I am no expert on these, but shouldn't one hex head bolt be on one side of the ramp and one on the other?

My thinking is that the ramp should be balanced on its long axis (its thickness) otherwise its going to wear the pivot shaft bushing more on one side than the other, which over time might cause it to vibrate. I would also suspect that the further you get away from the pivot (higher speeds), the more likely it is to shake side to side.

Just a guess, but is the pivot hole more worn on the side with the bolt heads? Try putting differnt drill bits (which are in 1/64" or 0.015" increments) on either side of the pivot to see if the hole size is consistent. This is a pretty coarse test so if it works.....its not good.

I might be way off on this, but thats a lot of wear in my book.

OTM, thanks for the input. I'm pretty sure the weights screws are in correct, they thread in. I should have mentioned all 3 weights are the same so I don't think anything is out of balance.

Sounds like NUKE is thinking the same thing I am. Only it wasn't smooth trails or lakes it was plowing thru the powder in Montana. But the issue was I spent alot of time in the same RPM range.

Well regardless these weights are going on the shelf to collect dust anyways.
