Does track need to come off for driveshaft bearing change ?

Well i joined the busted bearing club today , travelled 2 hours fro a ride , Got to tear up a whopping 6 miles on some sweeeeet trails them BLAMMOO !!! Sled died out , kept restarting but as soon as it moved it would stall . For 3 hours i messed around with it thinking it was water in the gas or a bad connection . Finally gave up and loaded it up and came home , my freinds are having a great ride as i type this by the way . Anyway , thanks to TY i found the problem after about 2 hours of tearing the wiring harness apart thinking it was those ground blocks . Those are fine . I stumbled across a post that said ERR_1 , . I saw that a bunch today . So anyway id like to thanks the rest of the busted bearing club for posting their failures , It really helps us rookies find those problems . I never would have looked there honestly . Well anyway i was wondering if the track and whole driveshaft needs to come out to replace the bearing . Oh yeah the speedo sensor took quite a whack too so thats prob toast .

no you can do it with it all in place a buddy helped me do mine last year. A bit of a pain but not to bad..
 
BEARING

It shouldn't be too hard if you are somewhat mechanically inclined. I would first remove the secondary clutch. From there remove the four bolts that hold the ring around the bearing and the speedo pick-up. After that you need to look at the back side of the bearing in the tunnel and find the two set-screws and loosen those. Those set screws hold a collar on the back side of the bearing. The collar and the bearing should be one piece and slide out the end of the shaft. If the bearing doesn't slide easy enough I would take a punch and small hammer or mallet and tap the bearing from inside the tunnel out the end of the shaft. Spray some WD-40 or silicone lube on the shaft to ease the bearing off. This is a pain to work under the sled in the tunnel but helps if you don't want to remove the entire driveshaft. Reverse the process to install the new bearing. Ill add photos of what this looks like when I get to my personal computer at home.
 
Use anti-seize on new bearing so it comes out easily the next time. the ones I've done have come out no problem but other people have posted up the bearing being seized on....
 
my apex and my rage both had frozen bearings, PAIN IN THE #*$&@, to get off, I actually hade to remove the driveshaft and cut both of them off.
 
When I replaced my track at 7000 miles I pulled that bearing off to get the driveshaft out and mine slid right off. It was still in great shape. I guess you can provide some longevity in these bearing if you just repack them every year and antiseize them every time you remove them.
 
Mine comes off easy every year for greasing. I think the heat from the bearing disintigrating welds it tight to the shaft and makes it very difficult to get off. I have used a small puller with some sucess. Make sure and re-pack your clutch side jackshaft bearing!! Does a lot more damage if driven on after bearing lets go. Sorry to hear you missed a ride, season is too short. Towed back a rented 2010 e-tec on Sat. due to serious fuel leak. Could have been a burn down! :yam: Replacement sled was brought out and all was well. 410kms later sure wished I had a 2011 with power steering...

Im an former GM technician and currently work on aircraft electro-mechanical actuators and electric motors . And ive helped quite a few of my cat riding pals replace the bearings in their sleds those are quite a pain as you do need to remove the shaft and track . I was looking at mine and it didnt look like the whole shaft needed to come out , good cause i plan on going back to make up for that missed ride . My sled has 2700 ish give or take the 6 miles i racked up today . Never noticed a vibration before hand i can think of . It kinda jerks my chain that Yammi wasnt smart enough to put a grease fitting on there . I guess theyll sell more speed sensors that way though . I held my ground and wouldnt let a Cat tow me back to the road though, a pal with a Rage towed me a so i saved a little face there but jeez those Cat guys are relentless when a Yammi finally breaks Ive been getting sent pics of me on the back of a Cat on my cell half the day , I guess they gotta get there jabs when they can since the chances are few and far between . Have you taken the cover off the bearing and greased it before? I've done that the last couple seasons and just rolled over 2800 miles today. Starting to wonder if I should be worried too.
 
No I have never greased it but i bought the sled used with like 1500 on it . Im guessing the last owner never did it either though .

hate to say this but I got almost 8,000 miles out of my bearing and I didn't even greese it... So mine lasted without a problem. Greesing them often and getting the water out I think it will last for almost ever.. I replaced it this year just to be safe and it was still good... Just greesed it and kept as a spare. The new one I just greesed last night and it was amazing how much water was in that dang thing...
 
I believe maintainence intervals have something to do with the environment the sleds live in when not ridden, and some of it is dumb luck. I lube mine annually. No issues.
 
FYI, the two set screws on the inside of the bearing collar are torx heads. T-10 if memory serves me correct. Also, make sure you loosen your track adjusted bolts and rear axle all the way first. This should give you a little more play and the driveshaft won't be pulled tight to the rear of the sled.

For what it is worth, we have a group of riders 7 w/ yamaha-RX,warriors, Attacks, Rage Vectors, Some babied, some beat on, one or another bearing will go out before 5k miles, we have found out the hard way trip after trip, we are now replacing drive & upper lower gear bearing every other yr. & the three seals. need them or not.. average season riding. Canada hi mile trips, all of them befor you leave. its about $200 to do it yourself in a heated garage. So is it worth it to chance it & screw yours and other peoples trip up. Its the same amount of labor to do one from a hotel in the cold. somethink to think about,

also I just change my secondary bearing- the "hard one" at 13k. It really wasn't that hard, I wish I would of did a year ago after doing it.
