Dreaded Code 84

Hi folks;

So its been 2 years since I rode my Phazer...sinful, I know. Last winter was so miserable where I live there wasn't a lot of people out...everyone hibernated lol.

During this time I bought the updated ECU and the wiring harness for the grounding issue. The winter is looking not bad so far for 2014 so I figured I would install the two.

What I wanted to do was start the machine first, get fuel back in the lines etc...check it all over, since it sat for 2 years. I checked everything over, then had visitors. When I got back to it I dove right in, changed out the ECU (possibly the easiest thing I have ever done in my life) and then added the updated wiring harness. Added fresh fuel, turned the key a few times to prime it good, and it started right up!

I let it warm up for a few minutes, all is good. As soon as I blipped the throttle I got the dreaded code 84, and the engine wouldn't rev up at all, as per the TORS error. I shut it off, started it again, and the same thing. Checking the error code chart (thanks TY!) and it tells me - besides the potential throttle cable and TORS switch issue, that it could be an ECU or wiring harness issue...lovely :(

So now of course I am kicking my #*$&@ because I didn't start the machine before I did everything to it - troubleshooting 101. Before I started it a 3rd time, I blipped the throttle a bunch or times, and turned the handlebar back and forth a bunch of times, thinking something has possibly jammed or the TORS switch has some corrosion or oxidation on it since it has sat for 2 years, or the throttle cable has jammed a bit. It started and ran fine after this.

So I know this is a long post, but I wanted to provide as much info as I could. So some questions:

- Could there be an intermittent issue with the updated ECU I bought (it is used, but updated)?
- Could the updated wiring harness for the grounding issue cause this, if installed incorrectly?
- Or could it have been simply because it has sat for 2 years, and the TORS switch or something did indeed corrode a bit?

It spends all its time covered indoors, so no moisture issues hopefully. No mice issues either.

I really want to think its just the fact it sat for so long. I do not want an intermittent issue coming up, especially if I am out on a trip.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I would change out the new ECU for the old one and try it again. But what I believe is that the throttle cable needs a cleaning and lube.

Make sure the throttle cable is clean and moves freely and has proper freeplay.

Yamaha suggest not to lubricate the throttle cable, it could lead to freezing. The only place they suggest lubrication is where the cable connects to the leaver.

I was going to swap out the ECU but it has been fine for the rest of the day now...taken the sled for a couple rips around the yard. Not enough snow to go anywhere else yet. If code 84 comes back I am going to swap that first, just for the halibut.

Update - everything is good with the sled, could have simply been the TORS switch with a little oxidation or dirt or something from sitting so long. Runs like a dream again :)
