Drive axle broke in 2 pieces

I have an 05 RS Venture and this past weekend my drive axle snapped in 2 pieces just outside the outer drive cog colar on the gear side. My dealer said he had never seen one break before. He contacted Yamaha and they said that they have not had any issues with this axle. Yamaha attributed it to hitting something. I just can't see this as it is up inside the tunnel plus this shaft is about 1.5 inches thick. If something were to break you think it would be the front arm or rail. I also run my track tension on the loose side. Has anyone else had an axle break?

While I wait for parts does anyone know if you have to remove the inner chain case housing to get the axle back in place? I don't know if there is enough room to get it in there or not. If I have to take it off what is a good way to hold the jackshaft while I take the chain side nut off?

thanks

I've read about that happening with the Apex models. In fact there was a recent topic on the Apex/Attak side about this.

Guess that might say something for the ZX2.

RTX, I have close to 14,000k on the sled.

Grimm, the ZX2 I have is on my Nytro. This was on my Venture with the Pro comfort.

If anyone knows about having to take the inside chain case off or not I would appreciate it.

If it's like the 2003 RX1, you will have to that the whole chaincase assembly off, the inside half also, I've tried to get it off by just taking the outside of but couldn't get it through the holes in the tunnel. The left side (clutch side) has a collar holding the bearing in place with 2 hex screws that lock it against the shaft, you may have to loosen that too. You need a big (36mm I think) deep socket to get the top nut off the shaft, some guys make these by extending the socket via welding somehow. Do a search on 36mm and you should find lots of posts.
