Reading through the RX1 service manual it says to use API GL-3, 75wt oil in the chain case.
What is the difference between GL-3, GL-4 and GL-5? Can they all be used interchangebly?
Can a typical 90wt rear end gear oil be used if 75wt is unavailable?
Thanks

Basically, the purpose of the oil is to lubricate the chain, sprockets and bearings. You can go with as heavy an oil as you like, but keep in mind that the heavier the oil is, the more resistance (and less speed) will result.
Alot of dealers just use 80w90 so yes it will be fine, Thats all i have ever used in trail sleds, If your going to race it use dextron, nice and thin, no resistance

Years ago, sleds used ATF in the chaincase. I wonder why they don't use that anymore. It's light weight.

Synthetic gear oil is also a very good choice, and it can be had at any auto parts store, it is very good in cold weather and it usually is 75W-90

When I change gears, or have the chain case a part for what ever reason, I always have used Mercon. or Dexron III is the same. Never had a problem that I know of.

Hey RX4fun - If you know someone that sells Amsoil, getthere gear and chaincase oil. It is clear as water, and keeps everything clean. A bottle is more than enough, and it is around 5 bucks. Just my 2 cents.
