We were drift pounding all morning soft fluffy white stuff, finally got to the trail about 20-30 miles.
This is what happen. Less then one mile on a packed trail..first all day I came over a small whoop skis raised about a foot, stayed hard on the gas, made it about 40' and bang. Had no brakes, no power so I knew something just went. And it crunched all the way to a stop, first thing I though I would see is oil from the chain case. But after review realized I just snapped the axle right next to the first driver on the chain case side.
I have never see this happen.........
So my question is, has anyone else have this happen?
Second, when I change it out I plan on doing antirachets. Was something I was planning anyway. Can I go with 9tooth 2.52 pitch from doo without modification.
Thanks Familyman

Too much torque!!! Have heard of it before but have never seen it myself. When you take it appart have a good look at the chaincase where the lower bearing sits. A lot of flex has taken place here and the case could be cracked or bent.
No signs of oil loss, but I will have it checked out. Thanks.

If I were you I would make sure you replace both bearings on either side of the drive shaft. Of course the one on the clutch side but I would also take the time to replace the bearing in the chaincase. It is a pain to get it out but I have done it before. I say this because when that shaft breaks it put a combination of thrust and radial load combination on the bearing torquing it and could ruin the races inside the bearing. Even the slightest "tweak" in the bearings side wall could cause premature breakage. These bearing are made pretty much only for radial loads also so that thrust load puts alot of stress on the inner race.

My 2000 SRX snapped in exactly the same manner. However I thought it might be related to the Speedo side driveshaft bearing letting go 2 weeks prior and stressing the driveshaft (had to drive 25km home with bearing gone). 15,000km on my Apex and starting to worry! 2011 Apex in my future, just want to finish the season on this driveshaft.
Dealer said he hasn't seen this happen to an apex. I don't think I would worry.
With 3400 miles I have not a clue on what caused this one to go.
I will have the bearings looked at as well as the case and anything related to the break.

Yep, they break. If you look close, you may very well see a hairline crack that had been there for a while. Change both bearings and inspect the chaincase as mentioned.
A 9 tooth 2.52 pitch driver will work just fine with a 1.25" or 1.5" track. Much taller a lug than that and you're looking at removing tunnel protectors. I am running 9 tooth Wahl Bros. in mine.
I don't have personal experience with Doo Drivers, but I see no reason they shouldn't work.

If you need to change bearings, bring it up, Brent. I'll give you a hand. I have a press.

Check your front w arm or pivit arm if its cracked it will flex causing alot of ratcheting. then finally a snapping it. My pivit arm just came out in 4 peices took out the jack shaft bearing and the speed sensor. DO NOT USE THE OLD quench nuts for the W arm. they dont hold after u take them out. Buy nylock nuts or pin them. I am putting in a new W arm all new bushings & bearings and new track and anti ratcheting drivers. Good Luck how many miles on sled.
Suspension looks good. No cracks, bent arms or anything.
Nate, thanks....Its in the hands of the dealer. Seeing if its covered under the YES.
I will let you know of the outcome. As of right now I might be watching the snow melt from the house.
Looks like Friday and Saturday might be out of the question, guess I should stock more parts.
