easy first start

Just doesn't sound like a good idea to blow into the fuel tank? I use a slight amount of starting fluid in each carb and put the air box cover back on, choke it and it starts on the first try.
Yeah, cause starting fluid is a good idea.

What's wrong with starting fluid? It's a 4 stroke... I'd rather not breath fumes or blow moisture into the tank. Lighten up radianguy?

Probably nothing wrong with it, but you're saying something IS wrong with using the vent tube to pressurize the tank, so you opened the comparison discussion. It takes very little volume and pressure so it's not going to cause a moisture problem. The vent tube is open to atmosphere anyway. Breathing fumes is not an issue either. It's a very simple process and it works well. If you're uncomfortable trying it, use the process that you are more comfortable with.

Starting fluid in the cylinders? Do you wanna blow a hole in your piston?

Guys I said I use a very small amout of fluid, less than one second of spray per carb and I don't fire it untill I have the air box cover back on. Do you really think that small amount is going to blow a hole in the pistons? come on guys are pumpping NOS in these things with no problems for long runs.

starting fluid by itself will remove lubrication from your cylinder walls. Not good.
What I do if I have to use starting fluid is give it a shot of WD40 at the same time to keep some lubrication in the cylinder .

I've read that too. Good tip about the WD40. That's a good all around lubricant and protectant. main ingredient is fish oil I've read.

I only use starting fluid on any type engine as a last resort when experiencing a problem and attempting repairs.

Be careful with the starting fluid. It does dry the upper part of the cylinders and the top rings. It does'nt take to long to scuff the top rings.

I'm sorry I did forget to mention that I hit it with wd 40 first...I use so little starting fluid I doubt any in liquid form makes it to the pistons. Wouldn't it take just one stroke to coat the cylinder walls again anyway?

What I made was a small bottle with 2 gas lines coming out of it, hook it to the inlet of the full pump hang over pump when it starts shut it off reconect gass lines and start it again will have enough gas in carbs to pump from tank . STEVE

Big myth. WD40 is petroleum based.

How about pressurizing where the gas cap is or will the air go out of the gas vent line? I read some guys do it this way. Does it work? Simpler then finding the vent tube...

I too thought about doing this??????????????? But it would just bleed off into the vent tube.... MM.

You guys really need to try the vent tube. You will laugh at how easy it is after all this discussion. All you do is blow into it and put your thumb over hole and turn the key. No starting fluid, WD40 or any other detonator. Just air.

I agree with the simplicity of the vent tube. I read this thread and went to the rage and found the vent tube no problem. It is wrapped in a spring type material and attached to a metal fixed vent tube with a clip. Remove the clip take hose off and blow. It takes about 3 breaths to pressureize the tank. Pinch it shut with your fingers, have choke partially on and crank it over. About15-30 seconds and it runs. Let go of air line let it run and re attach hose line to fixed tube. Doesn't get any easier than this. Good luck . Combat ;)!
