if i were you id wait to see what yamaha is going to do about the motor before making any judgments or decisions about jumping ship..
There was soneone else on this site who fought for two years and finally got a FREE complete motor for there 03 rx-1 and installed by yamaha.
Like i said before.. no way is yamaha not going to cover it if you can prove the rod nut fell off..

I don't know what sort of proof will convince them to help me out.
The nut was found intact in the pan with no sign of stripped threads.
The stud was bent and hammered a little, but the threads that hadn't been impacted show no signs of stripping.
The crank doesn't show any "bluing" or signs of extreme heat.
The Yamaha dealer and mechanic that took it apart said the nut came off.
I had two experts in engine failures (one on car and truck engines, the other specializes in high performance bike engines) as well as several engine builders at a local machine shop examine photographs and some of the parts. Each and every one of them said no question about it, the nut came loose and lead to the failure. Each one said proof was in the crank condition or lack of overheating evidence and the fact the nut was off and in the pan instead of on a broken stud.
In my last conversation with Yamaha customer service I gave them this information. The response was "OK the nut came off. You have no warranty and we are unable to help you."
When you consider that:
- my sled was waiting for back ordered parts and out of service for 9 months of the 12 month warranty period (more than 2 months during the sledding season)
- my dealer refused to sell me an extended warranty arguing that they make no money on warranty work (I complained about this to Yamaha Canada customer service last spring too)
- the sled has been meticulously maintained (and everything during the first year was done at the dealer including the following non-warranty work: tune up, all oil and filter changes except one, secondary clutch rebuild, new chain, upper sprocket, all drivetrain bearings, chaincase seals, new track install, etc.)
- the engine is 100% stock
- the engine failure occurred 3 1/2 months out of warranty and at less than 1/2 the mileage before the first scheduled engine maintenance (valve lash adjustment).
How do you recommend I go about convincing them to help me out?
At this point I think it's irrelevant that the nut loosened first. Considering the circumstances and the fact that I have done nothing to cause this problem I was expecting them to help me out without a huge fight. Yamaha hasn't even looked at the engine or sled in person - yet I was told they would if I had a Yamaha dealer take it apart.
Sorry I've turned this thread into this. I don't enjoy publishing these facts and my plan was to keep this quiet while I kept pushing Yamaha.
Brian, if you want to see some pictures of the parts I can PM them to you.
Right now I wanted to temporarily forget about this mess and figure out what my sled options are for next season...

If you wanted the extended warrenty, the dealer can't deny you this. All the dealer is is a dealer of Yamaha. Personally, If I wanted the extra warrenty and my dealer said no, I would have said no to the sled. Seems it would be cheaper for Yamaha to just give you a new sled. 10 grand is alot of money for an engine.
Sorry to hear about your unfortuanate luck.

Ask your dealer when the regional service rep is coming to look at your engine?
They can find out. All they have to do is call him.
We have been told the best way to deal with our issues is thru the dealer. Based on my personal experience with Yamaha Canada and my dealer for the last 9 years, I agree. I got a problem, I go to dealer. If not straight forward, dealer gets service rep to look at photos over internet or actually come look at it. So far I have received everything I have requested and more using this method.
There is not much sense calling corporate unless your dealer is a Dick.
If you have a good dealer and the dealer respects you and your business.
He will make it happen if at all possible.
If the dealer thinks you are an abuser or a dick, ferget it and move on or sue. You have not got a chance without the dealer on your side, IMHO.
Hope it works out for.

Vince, I was trying to buy the warranty after I had already owned the sled for 6 months (and it was currently out of service with a broken suspension and I was still fighting with them to repair it. I was told I must have abused it as they hadn't had a single problem with these 2005 monoshock suspensions except for me).
Yamaha customer service last spring said the dealers are not required to sell to their customers. I was told to try another dealer but I wasn't able to find a dealer within a reasonable distance that would sell me a warranty. When I spoke to customer service last week and brought this up again I was told the same thing.
Riceburner, considering that my dealer refused to sell me an extended warranty...
The dealer it is at right now I trust - however this is the first time they've seen my sled.
Yamaha did look at at a couple of pictures the dealer e-mailed in but said they won't help. I've asked Yamaha in writing why and they simply say I have no warranty so they won't help. I also specifically asked what caused this failure but Yamaha will not provide me with an answer (they have just repeated no warranty, can't help).
Heck with it. Here are some pictures of the engine.

One thing that drives me nuts is I truely do not believe these sleds and especially the motors are junk, nor time bombs. I believe this is a freak rare failure that has plauged only a handfull of RX-1's (relatively speaking). These Yamaha 4-stroke sleds have so much going for them compared to the competition.
The suspension in 2005 was definitely a problem and now Yamaha pretty much admits it. The 06 suspension is much better (still a little weak though) and I believe the 07 RTX will be very durable.
What sucks is because of the failure prone 05 suspension (that Yamaha refused to admit last season) and the fact that my dealer hates doing warranty work (they make no money on it), I was unable to enjoy riding my sled far too often and I was unable to buy the warranty I needed for this season.

Your dealer is an idiot. What dealer says he will not sell you an extended warranty. Any dealer could of sold you one. You got screwed by your dealer and Yamaha.
