Engine Misfire - UPDATE - Over Rev

Can you please tell me what the weight of the stock Viper weights are? (with the rivets in of course) I am going to have to adjust our Viper for over 10k and don't wish to remove weight to weigh it.

Thanks!

My RTX factory weights were 61 grams.

Just a suggestion.....find out what is the total weight (in grams) of the weights (with rivets) in the various Viper clutches (don't know if they run different weights across the models).

Determine how much weight needs to be added to correct the issue.

Then find out is there a stock Yamaha weight that would do the trick.

IMO - changing rivets is not quite as easy as it first appears to be. Again...IMO!!!!

Changing the entire weight out is easy. I know this is a more expensive solution, but it would be easier and safer too!

Just a suggestion and I'll back out now! :rocks:

Thanks! Mine is an XTX though....I have a scale was just trying to get info before I tear into it.

MN - I would like to chime in and say you made a good purchase to buy a kit that will let you adjust your rpm's. With the engine breaking in more and more, you will be able to fine tune for performance or any way you like it :)

I wish I would have stumbled on this issue a little more as just changing a helix will not really raise or lower engagement or rpms. You can drag the engine down more, but that is kinda reverse minded and will only lead you into the wrong direction. I have played with a lot of clutching and still learning....LOL.

Get it running good MN! :)

To be honest I'm not really bummed buying the clutch kit from Hauck. I spent some time on the phone visiting with Pat Hauck. I hope he is being up front and just not trying to make a few bucks. After visiting with him I think his kit might be a good fit for me. I want to be able to take the sled out west a few times and his kit will allow me to easiely change the weights out for riding here in MN and out west in WY. I think that will be good for me.

I do have a friend who bought a used Nytro XTX and it has the Hauck clutch kit in it and it was one of the smoothest shifting sleds I have ever ridden. So, I think this will be a nice fit. Lets hope.

I can say my biggest disappointment in the whole process has been Yamaha. I expect when I buy a 13K sled it should not have over revving issues out of the box. I have a Ski Doo 1200 and it has been spot on since the day we bought it. My dealer has been good to deal with. I guess I'm a buy it and ride it guy. I'm not a tinker and play with the settings guy. If I was I would look for a good used sled to buy if I had those skills. I think there a lot of guys like me out there. We work hard for our money and then when we do plunk down 13K we expect it to be spot on from the box and when it is not we expect the dealer to step up and make it right. Maybe I'm wrong…..not trying to stir the pot! Really I'm not.

I have a buddy who is really busy but has raced Yamaha sleds for years. He is going to help me install the new kit and help me tune it to run the best. He will be a huge help! I just hate bugging people with my issues. I know how valuable his time is and I just appreciate the fact he is going to be willing to help. I don't like to ask people to take time from their busy lives to deal with issues that are not theirs.

Thanks for all the help on here guys! I do appreciate it a lot.

Well said MN

We are all here for you and agree with you..... SHouldn't have to pay that much for a sled that has issues right out of the box.

As always, no bother to any of us here. Clutching issues, I'm glad you have someone there to help you....but if you need our help, you know where to post

;)!

Yes understood. We will help and I also believe you made a good choice in buying the kit. I did with Ulmer. Not because I had a issue I just wanted more mph and easier ability to tune. Always helps to have a good baseline and for what clutch kits cost if a good one is $ well spent.

Here is an update. Spent about 4 hours with a buddy today and we put in the Hauck clutch kit number 5. It helped a ton. We have some fine tuning to do but it is close. It runs so much better already. Here is where we are at:

I forgot to bring a scale so I'm not sure on the final weight on the clutch weights.

When you nail it the RPMs max out at 8700 and then once the track hooks up it backs down to about 8000 and slowly creeps back up. We felt we could get it a little better but we ended at that know that we might have to adjust it a bit once the motor hits 1000 miles or so. It does not over rev at all and when you nail it it does not miss a beat.

After taking it apart 6-7 times it is an easy job. I'm confident that I could adjust as needed. His set up was nice cause he was right next to the lake so we could jump out on the snow and run it hard and we where it was at. I'm not so nicely located.

Is anybody sure on what the max RPMs are and at what RPM the sled is pulling the max HP? We were wondering if we should get it up to about 8900 or so by removing weight from the tip.

XTX stock weight 61 grams. Going by the chart provided for an XTX sold to 6k to 9k I removed end and bottom rivet resulting in weight of 54 grams. Took it down the side street on the dolley wheels and ripped at about 8600 rpms and left a black streak about 4 cars long....lol. Might have hit 9k had I stayed on it.

SOOOOOOOOOOO what's the chance your dealer ended up with a high altitude sled and that is why you had issues? Can you please tell me how many rivets were in your weights to start with.

There were three rivets in the original weights. Two black and one silver. The silver was at the tip.

Wasn't high alt then they only have one rivet guess I was wrong.

My stock weights were at 60.9. Brought the scale home this weekend.

Now that I know enough to be dangerous, I messed with it some today. Kinda fun.

Here is where I'm at right now:

Sled - LTX Model
Secondary - stock spring and Hauck helix
Primary - Hauck spring and stock weights which are weighing in at 60.9 grams.
Weather - it is 33 hear today and it rained last night. Snow is sticky and set up.

Max RPMs when nailing it is 8700. I would like a little higher but it responses nicely. It back shifts nice too.

I think I will leave it at that for a few hundred miles and then look at adjusting it. The Hauck weights will be nice when I go out west. I can easily adjust them to meet my needs. I would like to fine tune it but I will wait till I can get some help from somebody who has a better understanding of the whole process. The A, B and C hole thing is kinda hard to wrap your head around.

I'm have the same issues as you. My sled has run fine for about 500kms not I got an update from mcx and now I'm hitting the rev limiter off the hop. Thinking dropping primary spring from a green green green to a blue pink blue.

Yes they will gain HP as the motor breaks in. When I pushed mine to 13#'s of boost the motor had been rebuilt and we tuned the clutch on the track dyno at Ulmer's. After 400 miles the engine was making so much more HP that the clutching was at 9000 rpms on 9 #'s and would over rev badly at 13. Had to add a lot of weight. The primary spring will not gain you much you can try going to 3-3 on the secondary though. That has settled mine down as it got more power till I could add weight.
