Hope someone can help. My sleds engine has a rattling type sound coming from engine area. At first I thought it might be the clutch rattle I had read about but the sound is coming from both sides of the engine. Not real loud but enough to bother me. Dealer said it is normal engine sound at idle. I have not had a chance to listen to someone elses yet. The sound is most notable at idle, don't really hear it when riding. I don't remember hearing it when the dealer started it up for instruction demo in the fall. Does everyone's sled sound like that or should I be concerned??

noise
My 08 rattles like a box of rocks, I also hear other noises coming from oil tank side, it is sounds that I believe are coming from the vibrations that are emitted from the crankshaft splines being to small and causing excess clearance between crank and stub shaft{ someone previosly posted that some dealer has been researching this noise issue} Take off your primary clutch and u wont believe how great this engine should sound, not a noise heard except the exhaust sound. Yamaha really needs to look at these 08 and 09 models :exc:

Mine makes a noticable mechanical "rattle" around the 5500-6500 rpm range. It almost sounds like noise resonating through the airbox or valvetrain noise. I've heard others comment on this, too.

I noticed my 07 RS Nytro is making engine noise now and I only notice it at idle. Actually we were riding and my friend heard it and thought it sounded odd. Not sure if this is normal. The sled runs fine and my fluid levels are all fine and I just put in am soil full synthetic at beginning of the season. Is this common? Sounds like its coming from inside the engine itself. I'm guessing it's the same thing you guys are hearing so I hope its normal. If something was wrong wouldn't I notice with the performance when riding the sled?
I only have 800 miles on the sled and 600 of that is just this year. I don't remember hearing it before but now the sled is past the broke in period. I took care of it and didn't beat it during the break in period and Did what the manual says.

Check with the dealer because there is a service
bulletin about the timing chain tensioners on pre
08 3 cylinders.

Does anyone else with a 2008-2009 Vec also notice the engine rattle in the 5500-6500 range?

Is there anywhere we can view the list of service bullitins for our selves?

Check this out.... remove belt guard, give her small starter shot, not enough to start the engine while looking carefuly at the primary. If the inner plate wobble just a tad then there it is.
This happened to my 05 while almost new after the dealer did a shim job to quiet her. I suspected at the time too much heat to separate the thing or heat at wrong place.

What he said! I'm going to replace the adjuster on my 06 as a preventative measure this summer. Yamaha is covering the adjusters on a case by case basis if the timing chain is actually making noise

Just had my 08 ltx at dealer for this issue, I have what I believe is excess play on the stub shaft that slides onto crankshaft, if y grab clutch and rotate it left and right I have about 4 mm free play, The 05-07 only have about 2 mm play. this extra play is the result of yamaha putting different cranks in the 08 and 09 models, they have more spline play, according to the yamaha service rep this is normal noise, I think its a bunch of bull because at 3000 miles my clutch is worn out, The dealer put on a new clutch to try to eliminate noise, it helped alot, but now I still have to repair my own clutch. The combination of the spline play and the Harmonic resonance that the 3 cylinder has .is contibuting to excessise wear . If anyone has a 08-09 I would look into this issue some more There is no written bulliton on this I was told, But yamaha is aware of more clutch movements on the 08-09s, Im putting in new bushings and rollers etc, I will see if this helps

My 08 Vector rattles as well. It does this at idle and you can sometimes hear it in the midrange. I measured the spline axial free play, and it seems to be about 1mm, and the sled has 1200 miles on it now. I dont know if this is what causes the noise but I will keep and eye on the amount of play.

My primary runs true and straight with no discernable wobble at all, and all of the bushings and weights are in excellent condition. I clean my clutch thoroughly at least twice per season. But after reading the latest posts I am now thinking it is indeed clutch noise that I am hearing, perhaps a clutch rattling harmonic in the rpm range that I noted.

Re: rattle
The noise is coming from the clutch, I removed my clutch at 1.5 miles and the noise was gone!! of course the clutch was new but not tight. Reinstalled the clutch and the noise was back, also the internal gear reduction makes a very noticable clattering noise simular to a worn out clutch. It's a simple design symtom that wont go away.

I rode a 08 vec gt Ltx last season and had the same noise from day one till I sold it around 900 miles and no change!rough rider said:Just had my 08 ltx at dealer for this issue, I have what I believe is excess play on the stub shaft that slides onto crankshaft, if y grab clutch and rotate it left and right I have about 4 mm free play, The 05-07 only have about 2 mm play. this extra play is the result of yamaha putting different cranks in the 08 and 09 models, they have more spline play, according to the yamaha service rep this is normal noise, I think its a bunch of bull because at 3000 miles my clutch is worn out, The dealer put on a new clutch to try to eliminate noise, it helped alot, but now I still have to repair my own clutch.
