bought a used attak last fall with approx 2000 kms on it...rode it for 4000 kms more...seemed to run great....sled did use about 4L of oil in this time which got me worried...so i did a compression check all at 165-170 psi hot....so i printed out the service manual page which says how to do the test and what the specs should be...specs are 179-230....also had the test done at the dealer and they said its 170psi...i did not do a wet test as of yet but will do it this weekend....so my concern is i am below specs....talked with a dealer they said its nothing to worry about....talked to a yamaha rep and he says a dealer could pull then engine apart and if they find nothing wrong its my bill anywhere from 3000-4000 bucks and if they find the rings are worn they will foot the bill....what do you guys think should be my next step??...i really dont want to take a $3000 shot in the dark...to me low compression means worn or not broken in top rings and using oil the same with the oil rings..im trying to fight this with yamaha warranty to at least get them to pay for rings and or pistons...the compression is below specs which tells me something is wrong..

4 liters in 4000 klms and they say thats ok? thats not normal and sounds like rings are done... do a leakdown like turk says !@

actually i got a number of excuses from them from me using amsoil 4stroke to switch back to yamalube 0w30 and run it for 2 more seasons until my warranty is up then they tell me the engine is done....to me having a heelclicker clutch kit making the engine rev higher then normal....lol this is the same engine that revs 15,000 rpm in the r1 bikes all day...

My 07 RTX has 11,000 miles on it and does not burn a drop of oil. There is no reasonable excuse why yours is burning oil IMO. It should be under warranty. I know a guy that had his 03 RX-1 rebuilt under the YES warranty because it was burning oil like yours.

I have studied various low tech equipt engines that burn oil and will say that if a 4 stroke has low comp, its valves or head gasket. On rare occasion its the piston, it usually looks more like a half burned candle, wasted to say the least. worn rings and cylinder scaring wont show enough loss in comp to say so. the smokers usually have worn rings or baked rings (lack of spring out) or worn cylinder, easily detectable be the ring ridge at top, in which case would need a bore or it would never take rings. with air cooled a nice mouse nest overheat will do it every time. would also like to say that I dont think valve seals are ever to blame, these basic engines don't even have em. with lawn equipt I can detect the blow by from the gassy/oily fumes etc coming out breather and oil will smell gassy when bad enough like a high mile car.
As far as a bullet proof yam sled engine, would bet it was highly or prolonged overheated or mouse nest or something went through to scar the cyl. either of which could have happened before you bought it and just now getting bad. I have to really trust the owner to buy used, as it's not a cheap lawn mower.
The only hopefull cause would be a breather problem (unlikely)or a leak(should be noticable)

This is what I would do.... Don't say anything about tests itself. Just say fix it as to why it's using oil, because it should not. Then they have to do it. As well as good dealer knows how to deal with Yamaha. Your dealer is a dummy...

Try another dealer, excessive oil use should be a warranty repair regardless of the cause.

thanks for the tips guys...was always thinking this is not normal....sled is going into dealer in a week or so after i finish putting my new donuts in.....was in there today telling them about my problem for the second time lol....and there like well have to think about this...im like don't think about it do something....ill keep posted as to what comes out of it...

I have found all the Yamaha dealers that I have dealt with to sing the same song: "your oil consumption is normal", no the warranty does not cover that part or problem", "I will check on it"but they never get back to me. I gave up on them many years ago and do all of my own work. I have an 03 RX1 which uses more oil as the mileage increases. As of my last ride, it uses 1 qt in 900 miles although the compression is wihin specs. For $300 in parts, I am going to rebuild it myself. When dealers perform warranty work, they are usually rushed since this work does not have a profit margin. I've helped more people than I can count fixing things that were supposedly fixed by the dealer. Too bad, gives the products they sell a bad reputation.

located a leakdown tester at work....going to try and do it tomorrow....any tips for finding tdc or to do the leakdown test...i have the tester but no instructions with it..

I switched to 0w40 Mobil 1 and haven't used as much oil if any at all. I would use some oil with 0w30.

I wouldn't take the chance with 3k at stake. Maybe you should start considering tradeing it in or just using it.

My sled used oil since it was new. It runs like a bear and plugs looked good at 3K miles. Might be the way I ride. Plus I'm big so it works hard with lots of hills here or I should say mountains to fly up. Mt. Washington is next door.

there is a tech bul on this yamaha say to do is put ring free in and do a shock treatment an then change oil and she what happen i have seen this a couple of times it is because of the poor gas and all the carbon build up after you have done this you must also change the oil filter because the oil will just be black this may be your problem and it is a lot cheaper and better than having the engine torn down and if does't work it does cost a lot of money then i would do the leak down test

I used the amsoil in my 07 attak this season and mine is going thru oil also. hopefully a few trips left before the snow is completely gone, but at the end, i will be going back to yamalube.
