Error Code 12

I've been reading up on this since I had this problem happen to me today, but here is my situation and I would like some fresh views on this. I pulled my 08 out of the shed today to do some cleaning and knew that it didn't turn over because I figured the battery was dead. Well i went to jump it just to see how she ran and to hear the baby purr and all I got was click just like the battery wasn't charging. I went up on the trailer and looked and the yellow warning light was blinking with error code 12 which is the crank shaft position sensor. On the chart it said this will prohibit the sled from starting.

An hour or so later I went to put the jumper cables on the battery again and it popped off and was running good. This is when I noticed that i did not have the code blinking at me. I shut it off and started it again 5 minutes later (without jumper cable) and again it started with no code. I let it sit for about a half hour and went to start it and all I got was a click and it wouldn't run (without the jumper cables). I checked and the code still didn't appear. Am I okay or should I worry about the the sensor code? I am going to put a new battery in the machine, but over night I am going to have it on the charger. I called a dealer and they said it would cost me $105 in parts plus whatever labor it would take. What do you guys think?

I would try the battery first. ECM will do all kinds of funky things in a low voltage situation.

Have you rotated the primary manually at all backwards for any reason? is your Nytro a 08? I heard they had a prob with it jumping the timing tensioner that year if rotated backwards??? Good luck, and I agree that a low amp condition can make the ECU a bit funky. X your fingers and hope it's just a dud battery.

No I haven't messed with anything. Fingers are crossed!...had to change throttle bodies last year and dont want another big cost this season!

Well I bought the sled before last winter. The motor has a little corrosion on it because the guy I bought it from rarely covered it, but I got such a good deal on it that I couldn't pass it up. It was also the first sled I've ever bought (I'm just a young gun). I had it sitting in the shed over the summer and went to run it and I believe error code 84 wash flashing and the throttle wouldn't hold and it wouldn't accelerate. I took it to the dealer and it was corroded off or something next to the throttle body. Long story short, it was still under warranty (thank God!) and Yamaha recommended that the dealer just change the whole assembly.

So did you leave it on the charger last night and have you tried it this morning? I was under the impression that the TB's came out of your pocket.

Everything checks out fine. Sled is running fine. Oil changed, Chain Case oil change, A-arm bushing about to be changed. Now just to pray for snow and to get a new battery!

Code 12 is displayed because the engine did not turn over when the key is in the crank position. The ECU is expecting a signal from the sensor while cranking the engine and because there is nothing to sense it displays the code. Your problem is not with the ECU or sensor. Most likely it is the starter solenoid or battery causing the problem. Fully charge the battery with a trickle charger and have it load tested (many automotive parts or repair shops will test it for free). If the battery is OK then the starter solenoid may have corroded internal contacts which happens when water gets into the "sealed" relay then it sits for an extended period. You'll hear the relay click which is the contacts closing but due to the corrosion no electrical conduction takes place so the starter isn't energized. If that's the case you'll need a new starter solenoid. If it clicks again and doesn't turn over leave the key on and jump across the two large posts on the relay and it should roll over and start.
