Was realligning the skis on my wife's 2006 APEX and noticed a great deal of free play in the handle bars. I found Tag #31 to be sloppy, replaced it
which is the (Relay Rod) it helped somewhat. In further examination I found the Steering Rod (Tag# 19 to be moving excessively when you grabbed both ski loops or the handle bars and shifted them left to right. The culprit is is that the spacers (Tag# 23)are slightly to long and do not allow the steering bearing (Key # 18) to Pull up snuggly around the steering rod. Machined a 1/32 off the spacers and presto the excessive play is gone. For the record I checked a few of the 2007 sleds (NEW ONES) and they also had excessive play out odf the box.
Print out the schematic on the Yami site to identify the componets, hope this will information will help someone with this situation.

Yeah I have also replaced several parts on my 06. The combination of the tall riser and tall mountain strap. My sled was real tight when new, no play at all. After 500 miles of boondocking is was noticably loose. I also removed the spacer and machined them down. This helps for a while. This fall I took everything apart and replace upper and lower steering post bushings, both rod ends at the base of the steeing post and the plastic bushing on the shaft behind the chaincase, then replaced the relay rod up front. There is a slight amount of play in the outter tie rod ends but its liveable for now. Should work well for this winter. After that its time for a new sled for me. Eric

I was looking at the drawing and wondering if you are you talking about the the upper and lower spacers on (5) column, steering 2 or the ones down on (9) column, steering (by 31)?
You would have to pull the seat, tank everything to get to the ones on 2 (5) column, steering correct?

To be honest a little play in your handlbars doesn't make any difference. When you drive your car you will feel the play but when it comes to sleds who cares? I rode Cats for 14 years and they always had lots of play in the handlebars and they were some of the best handling sleds ever built. My Polaris sleds always had play in them and they also handled great. My Ski Doo was the first sled I've ever owned that had tight handlbars and I can't tell any differnce riding that over any other sled. You not dealing with gears here, all these sleds have several tie rod ends because of the way they have to go under and around engines and stuff and with every tie rod you will lose that tight feeling. I think you guys worry way too much about little insignificant things.

They were worn oblong...
I packed the new ones with a bunch of grease..

yes i agree there is too much play in these yammies....most of us agree that it is MAINLY in the handle bar bushing...I think these are a poor design....

8600 miles currenlty on the Apex and there is alot of handlebar play, probably 1 1/2 inches of wiggle at the end of the bars. Over summer I want to do a complete going through of the sled and this is one of things I want to fix. Are the bushings in the steering that need replacing hard to get to. Anymore advice or tips on the subject.

I took mine apart this fall and machined the steel spacers and sanded down the plastic bushings on the steering post and the ones on the shaft that runs from the reverse shift lever area to the front of the sled, then I installed grease zerks at all four places. You can grease the two on the steering post when you pull the tank for the exhaust donut inspection and the other two anytime. Do a search for more detail, this was covered quite a bit before
if you look at my thread, "my big pile of crap" you will see how to make the shaft and use bearings.
my only regret in this is that I wish i would have bought self aligning pillow block bearings before making the shaft. I made everything from bearings i had kicking around.
msc has a split pillow block baboted bearing that would work with some face machining with the stock shaft.
