Exhaust Gaskets (Donuts) - Change them and avoid a headache!

Guys....my buddy has 8000 kms on his Attak and his donuts on the right side header were shot. Left side were ok but were on their way out. He heard a rattle when he fired his sled up and asked the dealer. Luckily he had a good dealer who suggested to him to change his exhaust gaskets.

Now my story.......I have about 10000 miles on my RX1 and at the beginning of my trip noticed my sled sounded like a tractor. I had to ride it out. Pulled the header and exhaust off and my header pipe was destryed at the flange and my pipe was bent like a pretzel with a huge gash.

I have Titanium headers on my 2005 but I am not about to shell out $306 for a new one. I ended up finding a stainless steel one from a 2003 to replace it. I really should have changed to exhaust gaskets before but they blew on the beginning of a 700 mile trip.

Bottom line for ALL THESE SLEDS.....save yourself a ton of work, money and headaches and change your 4 exhaust gaskets at the front of the header and while you are there the 2 exhaust gaskets in the mid-pipe. Just to be safe.....I would say 5000 miles would be about where you would want to do this. Total time to do this is probably about 2 hours start to finish.

Mine were gone at 5500kms...broke the flange off of the Y-pipe but didn't melt anything (thankfully). I think the 03/04 Y-pipes must work better then the TI because you don't see nearly the number of failures on the earlier sleds...

3800 miles all four donuts were toast. Left Y-pipe toast, right Y-pipe worn but not all the way through. About $400+ bones later, back on trail. Had Y.E.S. but couldn't wait to have it serviced and they wouldn't cover just the parts with me doing it. I say "no" to Y.E.S., for me anyway; just doesn't fit my schedule. That and I don't like anyone else working on my sled. My life, in my hands, that's the way I like it.

interesting that I just read this post as I have 7600 miiles on my sled and I am starting to hear a bit a fluffing noise if you will at intial start up. It goes away after riding for a bit. I am assuming it's the donuts... I hope that is all it is. am I in danger of running it like this?

Thats how mine started....don't ride it don't have to. Keep in mind...I had to ride 700 miles. Do yourself a favour....change em.

You have to remove the seat and fuel tank.

See diagram above.....they are the #4 parts. About $13 each US. Change the mid pipe ones while your at it (#17).

My donuts are shot too!! This only after 2,378 miles on an '07 AttakGT. Sled has been in the dealer since last Wednesday. Geeeez, ya think they'd have the courtesy to call me and tell me the parts are on back-order!!! I had to find that out today when I called to see if the sled was finished and ready to be picked up.

I called Yamaha cust svc and they said the parts will not be in the U.S. (on their way from Japan) until Feb 29....better than the expected March 14 I read in another post!

Long story short, I called Port Yamaha and they had them in stock and have them being overnighted to the dealer in NY. Thanks Kevin! You came through to a fellow TY'er again! gaskets and shipping were at my expense, but I will try to get Yamaha to foot the bill. it will be cheaper than the $250+/day it would have costed to rent a sled to ride, since I had a trip planned for the weekend.

And yes, they were being covered by my YES warranty.

So, if you are holding your breathe for the exhaust donuts, try giving the fine people at Port yamaha a call.

my old boss just brought his attak in with 6500 miles and dounts and both y-pipes where toast he was lucky to find the y-pipes at a local salvage yard for have price. seeing as he was planning on trading in for an x-tx next year. they will work for atleast another 3000 miles.

thanks for the heads up... I have a trip tonight up to quebec and planning to ride about 200-300 miles... I hope they hold out!

Careful about riding with the bad exhaust donuts. From what I am hearing, if they are not changed right away you an cause damage to the flex pipe or Y pipe.

Is there a procedure documented anywhere on changing these? I thought I read one at one point... no luck using the search.

I have the service manual... but it would be nice to hear from someone that has done this on an Attak.

Well I've got only 800miles on my Apex but will be putting on 1400 next week in the Great White North. I just put in an order in for a spare set of all six so I can nip this in the bud when the time comes.
