Extros are optional. If you have the $ then Extros are a great upgrade but are not mandatory. I run a backcountry on my xtx with the stock drivers. Iride a lot of deep off trail. I run the track at the stock tension and it has never ratcheted. Even when vertical in the real deep. Extros would be needed for boost. I would save the $ and put it towards the Star suspension kit. The backcountry track and the star suspension kit were two of the best mods I did to my xtx.

You must have read my mind, I thought your post last night. I dont want to spend the extra on star suspension kit this year so looks like I am planning next years mods already! I am not gonna get extros, for my type of riding I dont think I will need them.

I don't like them at all. I have a 2010 ltx with stock extroverts and it has never shown more than 105 on the speedometer while the older model gets 120 on a good day. It does not wind out like it should or get good mileage. Yamahas with extroverts don't even drive from all the internal lugs and I plan to remove them soon to upgrade to internal drive only.

Hi not sure if this is comparable but i stretched my xtx out to a new 151" x 2" and dropped to a 19 tooth top gear last winter to go out west to the mountains, because thats what track i had available and cheap. I was going to put extroverts on then also but due to cash and time it didnt happen, long story short it suprizingly never once racheted. i run the tension just a little looser then stock. hope this helps

On the RTX they are pretty much required if you want to run big lugs off trail. The XTX however seems to be able to get away without them. My buddy's XTX was fitted with the 1.75" BC and he has taken it to the mountains several times it would rarely ratchet. However those rare occasions when it would ratchet are the times he couldn't afford for it to like on a long climb. My personal opinion; if it gets big lugs it gets extros.
