Started my fall check out on my new apex, to me. First thing I did was check oil level.
To my surprise no oil in oil tank. I had not run the sled since my last ride in March.
I added 2 quarts to the tank and checked the oil. Oil level was at empty mark.
Went on to other items to get the sled ready for fall start up. I did not start the sled but
Got thinking why no oil in the tank, so following morning I drain out the new oil I put in
The day before. Removed the engine drain bolt and to my surprise 88 oz. drained from
The engine

How is that possible? I have done all my oil changes on my Vector and never got more
Than few oz. of oil from the the engine.

What am I missing here, any help be appreciated.

my guess is gravity you should always start the sled and run it for a few minutes before checking oil level.

Gravity make sense but when the dip stick shows no oil, not sure I would start the engine

Cracked oil tank???

Wierd. There's not a whole lot of room in the sump....

That's the point 88 oz. of oil would up past the crank and how does the oil drain back into the engine
I though the oil drained back to the tank then it's pumped to the engine

Don't get it

I hope someone can answer this...I'd like to know. I broke that sump cover on a log, on a brand new 03 rx1, and went about a mile til it blew. No lights, as the oil tank was still full, but the pump pickup down there must have sucked air or water (went through some trail water) and stopped giving the mains any lube. Toasted the bearings.

SumpBuster ---sorry about that, pure bad luck there.
Does anyone know what keeps the oil in the tank, not in the bottom the sump?
This could be a very serious problem, maybe not.

I'm not sure how the system works on the 4 cyl in the sleds. I would think when the sump cover broke, the oil pump would keep the mains under pressure until it got low, but my tank was full! Opposite of your condition, but the rod bearings lost oil and siezed, leading me to think the pickup in the sump cover draws and pressurizes oil from there? Have to do some research. The bike r1 engine might be a good place to start, but good off season question!

If the oil is gravity feed to sump oil pump, then when the engine starts, pumps oil to crank and where ever.
Engine stops drains back to oil tank? That’s where my problem is, did not drain back to the tank

the oil is pumped from the sump in the bottom of the motor up thru the motor and into the tank if you pull the top oil lines and start the motor it will pump all its oil out. the check valve in the pump most likely stuck open and allowed the oil to all come down thru gravity. on the issue of not starting the motor with no oil on the stick the motor will sense no oil pressure and will display lo-op and shut off after 20 seconds before any motor harm will come. I would run it and see if it happens again and if not it was a fluke if it keeps happening get it to a dealer.

Thank you thor452 that all makes sense. I will quit sweeting bullets

Started the sled and she fired right up. Checked oil level and adjusted to half way empty and full
Good to go
Thanks Thor452
