We have a few inches of snow here and since I was puttering around on my GT550F waiting for a perspective buyer to show up I decided that there was enough snow to take the RS Venture out for s scoot around the house also.

I started it up and let it warm for 15 minutes in the shed before moving it out. I started going around the house & yard & wow the engine feels so strong even though I was just puttering along. I did find though that in switching back & forth that it definately felt heavier & less manouverable than my old GT550F. Nothing that would be of a concern but I could definately feel it. Also the seating position was even more traditional on the Yamaha and did not lend itself to standing or kneeling whatsoever. When I get some time I will fiddle with moving the handlebars further forward but I don't think I will get much improvement as they already almost touch the windshield at full lock. One thing that I did notice after the sled was running for a while was a kind of hum that turned into a sqeal after a while. This kind of puzzled me so I stopped & popped the hood but could not really distinguish where it was coming from as it went away or lessened when I got off the machine. Could my weight on the machine cause something like this? I stopped riding a few times & started again to find the same noise after a while. I'm perplexed so maybe one of you guys can shed some light on this. Another issue that I found was putting the sled in reverse. Sometimes it would engage easily and other times it would not until the moved the sled forward a little bit. It also would give a clunk when going in/out of reverse or forward - input please.

Now I kmow puttering around in the yard is not really riding but this pointed out a few concerns that I need to address before any serious riding. The noise I mentioned really has me perplexed.

Probably your belt, mine did that when I first bought mine, it would squeal at bit off and on a bit until I put a few miles on it and then no problems, my reverse does the same thing, all my Yamaha's that had reverse did the same thing , but never had an issue with them ......

No this is not a belt sqeal type of noise, or at least not drive belt if thats what you are referring to, its something different that I have not heard before. Right now its not really a great concern as long as it goes away once we get some snow & I start running the machine. And if it is an issue then there is lots of warranty. We will see what comes of it...

The reverse thing is quite "NORMAL"................ Mine does it, my wifes does it also. And the clunking noise you hear is the slop in the drive train between reverse and forward......... Again all normal.. You will notice that the more miles on the sled you will hear the noise even louder.. That's when it's time to adjust your primary chain.. About every 500 miles until broken in.......... MM.

Concur on the reverse issue. Sometimes I have to jiggle the sled back and forth a few times with my feet before reverse will engage.

The squealing thing is interesting. You're certain that its not the belt? A new belt that has not been cleaned or scuffed-up to remove the mold release compound can be noisy at times.

The squeal has to be the belt.

I put a new belt on mine this year and it did the same thing. I just rode the sled. The belt is worn in and doesn't squeal any more.

Try to minimize the squeal by having the clucth engaged and be on the move.

You can also take the sled back to the dealer, and have them take out 3 little clutch shims that will make the squeal go away. ;)!

The noise is also there when the sled is just sitting there idling. Funny thing is if I switch my weight around it will stop & start. No snow to really go anywhere and run the machine.

Yep, a few times I had the belt squeal during idle.

Safety, idle your engine with the drive belt removed to see if the noise is still there. Only thing that moves, outside the engine at idle , is the drive clutch. The frame or motor mounts would have to be broken for the primary clutch to be hitting anything. (but the belt) Is this sled new? Just some thoughts. RR

Isn't it always the simple things that we don't think of right away. Excellent idea sir, thanks. And a big duh to me!! I will be able to ride tomorrow since we now have some snow so after putting on some miles if it is still there I will certainly try that.

And yes it is a new sled.

My belt is sqealing also, and I am experiencing the same thing as you.
At times when I get on the sled the sqealing will stop for a moment.
I will be adjusting the secondary for more belt free play.

While the belt is off, you may also want to take advantage of the opportunity to scuff/clean the belt (and your spare belt as well) to remove the mold release compound. Search the site for advice on how to do this.
