Bought my first sled today, I've been wanting to get one for 3 years now & have just been trying to figure out what I wanted. I've never owned one & only have limited experience on a few. Most of my friends have older beater sleds or utility like a skidoo tundra, I've driven a newer 550 fan & a 300 plus a few other older ones.
I knew I wanted something similar to a tundra that I could take ice fishing, trapping, playing around all the horse trails on the back 40 & a little trail riding. Although a tundra would work, I wanted something a little more playful & I'm not a big fan of 2stroke engines. I wanted something that would last & that is when I discovered the Yamaha, if you google anything to do with durability Yamaha is at the top of the list.
So I started reading all the info I could & looked into what different models Yamaha had to offer, I was really liking the Nytro MTX. I know they take some pretty harsh criticism about their weight but that wasn't really a concern for me, I don't live out west & won't be riding crazy mountains with it. I think for what I wan to do, this sled is going to be perfect!
I bought a 2008 Nytro MTX with lots of upgrades to address the problems the 08 & 09 models had. Although I doubt it would matter because the nicest sled I've ever driven is the 550 tundra! Lol!
Needless to say, I'm pretty friggen excited & can't wait to stare at that sucker in the garage for the next 5 months waiting for old man winter to show up!
So with all that being said, if you have any info or advise about this model sled or snowmobiling in general, I'm all ears as it's all new to me.

Nice choice, I too rode some lesser sleds to get hooked again after 30 years of not riding. I bought a 09 XTX for the reliability and the no mix solution.
You said yours has some updates/upgrades, what are they? Have the shocks been serviced lately? Has it been clutched?
Your gonna be pretty happy with your purchase. Enjoy.

I know I'm probably forgetting a few things, the list was longer than I can remember! Lol
Well he said it was his baby & he took really good care of it maintenance wise, I read up online about what to look for when buying one used & it all looked good to me.
I figure this thing is going to be like driving a Lamborghini for me compared to the stuff I've driven!! Haha

If it doesn't have one, install one: Subframe gusset kit. Do a site search for it and Griz, the 08 has the least level of subframe strength. ~85 USD piece of mind.

Here is Grizztracks writeup for how to remove the subframe to weld in the gussets, since he's the author it also has his avatar so you can PM him directly. Real nice guy, and he can help you out with the kit, or the steering relocate, or be a wealth of technical knowledge on the Nytro.

Wow! That's quite a job, definitely not something I would want to tackle on my own, might have to see if I can find someone in New Brunswick that can do it.Here is Grizztracks writeup for how to remove the subframe to weld in the gussets, since he's the author it also has his avatar so you can PM him directly. Welcome to the community!
I can't comment on the Nytro, but I can provide some general advice from a guy snowmobiling for nearly 30 years. Everyone focuses on the sled and while that is an important part, the best sleds won't keep you in the sport very long if you get cold. Invest in good snowmobile clothing as this is different than clothing designed for skiing and most other sports. Wind protection and breath ability is critical. You will be working riding sleds and will sweat. If you don't have the right under garments, you will get cold. You need outerwear that is both wind proof, water proof and breathable. Recommend a SNOWMOBILE suit with vents in the jacket both front and back to cool down on those warm days.
Ride with a group who doesn't pressure you to exceed your comfort level. Understand you will likely dump the sled several times the first couple years you ride until you learn to judge terrain and understand how the sled will react. It takes time to learn the inputs for a given scenario and you will screw up hear and there. Get back on and continue riding.
Just got a new sled at the end of last year and only managed 500 miles before the warmup. I'm with you and can't wait for white fluffy stuff to start falling... Enjoy your new toy!

Good For you, just remember when first ride!!!!!
Your sled is about TWICE AS FAST as anything you've RODE.
Also twice as smooth, meaning learn taking curves, you may be going 50 when you think you're only going 25/30.
And that means not making the curve.
Solution is when in trouble NAIL that throttle and SMILE.
Good Luck wish you were closer, BigDogrx1

Sounds like some good advise 4StrokeAddict! Thanks! I have a pretty good group of friends to ride with & i'm not afraid to lag back & keep my own pace.
Good to know about the snowmobile clothing, I have some really high end Gore-Tex snowboard clothing & lots of UA cold gear & Icebreakers under garments & was just going to wear that, I'll have to look into some real deal gear!
BigDogrx1, I think I'll run the GoPro for my first rip on my very own sled! Be nice to have that memory!
I'm not going to lie, it kinda scared the crap outa me when i got it off the truck at home, I had to drive it on the lawn a ways to get it to my garage, man when you hit the gas it sure does take off, I darn near flipped off the back of it & the skis came off the ground! Haha! I figured it might be a little faster than the 550 Tundra, the Nytro is supposed to be the equivalent of a 600 2stroke is what I've read.
I will be taking my time getting used to it for sure.
Think I'll go see if I can find the dip stick! (Yes, I know nothing about snowmobiles)
Come on winter!!!!!!!!! Haha!

Best $50. Bucks you'll ever spend is for a soft clutch spring, instead of engaging @ 3800/4000rpm, it will. Engage @ 2900rpm, great for loading and tight turns and backing up

By the way, with the mods yours has.
DON'T WORRY ABOUT A 600 2stroke, you'll WALK away from them.
Clutching and gearing makes that cruiser a MONSTER.

It engages at 2,200rpm right now, that's one of the things he showed me when I was looking it over.

Haha! That's awesome! Looks like I better start saving for something a little less powerful for my wife & kids! Initially the plan was for all of us to use it, this is going to be to much sled for them.By the way, with the mods yours has.

Would a Phazer be a good sled for my wife? She's never even driven one before.
