Four-Strokes Power Yamaha to Drag Racing Success
Yamaha four-stroke snowmobiles, led by the RX-1, are quickly becoming famous for their jaw-dropping top-end numbers. But Yamaha 4-strokes are certainly capable of more than just producing big horsepower over long distances. The RX-1 and RS Vector results during the recently completed grass drag season prove that Yamaha 4-strokes can also deliver awesome low-end power, excellent weight transfer and strong acceleration.
The stats don’t lie. At 16 top grass drag events in the Midwest and Northeast, including the entire NSRA series and select competitions from the PSGDRA, ASDRA, NEGDRA and PRO circuits, Yamaha racers compiled impressive results despite campaigning in a limited number of classes. At those 16 events, Yamaha took a total of 193 podium spots, including 69 wins.
Yamaha’s top grass drag achievement came on the National Snowmobile Racing Association (NSRA) series, where Pat Hauck and his RX-1 earned victory in the prestigious Woody’s Tri-State Triple Crown. Comprised of six key races in three states, the Triple Crown is awarded to the rider who consistently wins in one of five popular classes: Stock 500, 600, 700, 800 and Improved Stock 700. In 2004, the top rider was Hauck on his RX-1. Against the Midwest’s best grass draggers, Hauck dominated in the Triple Crown, accruing the highest overall points award on his way to winning the Woody’s Cup. Jerry Fix and his RS Vector nearly matched Hauck’s success, but in the end Hauck and his RX-1 won the championship.
Then there was John Wheelock. At Haydays, the biggest snowmobile event in the world, Wheelock took two victories and set a new Haydays track record of 4.25 seconds with his Simons CPR-tuned RX-1. But that was not enough – gunning to beat the previous world’s record mark of 4.22 seconds, Wheelock turned up the boost at the Woody’s Top Gun Shoot-Out held at Zurick, Ontario to set a new grass drag world record! The ProLine/Simons CPR/Knapp Attack RX-1 covered the 500 foot distance in just 4.07 seconds while posting an incredible top speed of 126.9 mph. That’s proof of Yamaha’s 4-stroke horsepower potential.
