I'm putting my suspension back together after get some maintenance done on it, and I made the mistake of pulling the shaft out of the front arm cross tube. There are plastic bushings on each end, and try as I might, I can't get them back in. Well, I can get one side of the other in, but not both. The cross tube must have a small bow in it, because the shaft is really close to the wall on the upper side, and doesn't leave enough space to get the bushing in.
Is there a special tool that's used to install these? Some fancy trick I'm unaware of? Is it going to hurt anything running without the bushing?

The best tool for this would probably be a hydrsulic press or something but i replaced all my front end bushings a few weeks ago and all i used was a framing hammer and a peice of wood. The better tool would be a rubber mallet. And for getting the 2 of them in, you could try just starting the 2 bushings on both sides get them lined up and try installing them the same time. All i can say is dont take to much pitty on them.
Btw im living on the avalon, and right now we are getting 15mm of rain and its the end of january i hope out west is doing better than us

Well, I can't get two of them started is teh problem. The only way to get one in is to take the shaft out completely, put a bushing over the shaft and send it through the tube.
I'm in Goose Bay, actually, and we have an AMAZING amount of snow. We've had well over 2m of snowfall so far the year, and only one little bit of rain in early December. And in addition to the 10cm or more we got yesterday they're calling for another 50cm between now and Sunday. We could actually use a day of two of rain to get things settled down.
The west coast is getting quite a bit of rain too though. Was talking to someone home last night, and it was raining hard.

Take the shaft out clean it and roll it across a flat surface to see if it's strait. If i t's bent you'll need to straiten it.

The shaft is straight. I know because the tight spot is always at the top of the tube even when I spin the shaft in the tube.berge75 said:Take the shaft out clean it and roll it across a flat surface to see if it's strait. If i t's bent you'll need to straiten it.

Maybe the cross-tube is bent?

I think that's quite likely. I just had some welding done to it to fix up the shock mounts, and it's possible that that warped it a little, if it wasn't already bent a little from 13,000kms of pounding.

I would try to staighten it or better throw a new one in there. With the way it is ,it's gonna bind and thrash those thin little bushings, and make that suspension sick even more than it does already.

Clean the tube of all grease, look into the tube with a light behind, like you would look down through a gun barrel. My guess is you will see one or two bumps where the weld Burnt through the tube. Simple fix is to use a die grinder with an extension to grind down the burn-through. As an extension you could probably use a spade bit extension and just mount a standard small diameter grinding wheel to it.
Looks like the torque arm is bent to me. Unfortunately I've bent quite a few, you can try to bend it back but it will be weaker. It needs some reinforcement
one of my least favorite things is bent front torque arms.
