Would rebuilidng the front shocks (7500-8000 miles) currently on a ApexGT be worth the time and $? My dealer isn't capable of doing this service and said it would be a waste of money as they could go 14000-15000 because they are the GYTR which ae made by Ohlins.

I think your due, a lot has to do with your riding style, if your a semi agressive rider like most people are on APEX'S that likes to cruise on lakes and groomed trails these shocks soak up and take up a lot of beating, my rule of thumb is 5000 +/- miles same goes for your rear suspension shock...

An average rebuild if all parts are in good shape for 2 front shocks shouldn't cost much more than $150.00 to $200.00, they usualy change the oil and a few seals and pressurize them...what part of the globe are you from so we can refer you to the closest dealer and get an estimate...

GYTR shocks are not Ohlins. They are made by Soqui, same as some of the other shocks Yamaha uses. The primary issue with any shock is oil breakdown due to heat and contamination. Pioneer and Hygear are to sponsors of this site that do this work. Turnaround time is good with either of these vendors. Tha added bonus is that you can have them revalved to ride better than the stock valving, for a relatively small cost. I would at minimum have them rebuilt at your current mileage.

Heck I sent mine to Goodwin Performance, and they revalved all four on my Nytro for about $200.00, and replace the mid spring in the rear. I dropped them off and picked them up. Great service, and turn around time. Can't wait tho try them.

Thanks for the replies and good information. Based on all of your comments I will certainly go forward with having the front and likely rear done.

If this is true and not a sales pitch. They said the work done will bring my nyto's feel a little closer to the apex smoothness, but still make it able to handle the big bumps. We will see??? Need snow to tell

I think a lot of the "when" you are considering when considering having them done is what you are looking to get out of them. Guys looking for top performance are usually in them dinking with the valving often enough where it doesn't make any difference? That's one extreme. The other might be somebody that takes a wide detour around any section of trail known to be rough. His may go for many years without the need for service. That's the other extreme. Most fall somewhere in between extremes. IMHO, if they seem to be doing the job, and are not obviously oil covered or bent or something, I don't think there is much reason for concern. If you just picked up a used sled that you know nothing about, I think that might be an exception. I'd get them done just to have a solid reference point? FWIW
