Fuel Shut Off (full tank trailering)


Just picked up the 90 degree one today for $5.95 Each.
 
Just finished the install. Took like 15 min. including making a bracket to mount them on.

Yes, that IS something that happens with 4 strokes if gas gets past the carbs. It happens with motorcycles, and even cars with carbs if they are running very rich, although thats slightly different. But the fuel will drip past the floats on the carbs, and will go somewhere...well the next place is the cyclinders. Once there the fuel is thin enough to slowly seep past the rings and into the oil. 2 stroke guys don't need to know about this, because when it happens its just pushed back through the engine once its started. With 4 strokes its stuck there with the oil.

In an extreme example, I've even heard of the rare bent rod if enough fuel goes through and doesn't drain from the cylinder enough. You won't get enough fuel flowing when trailering to do this, but its an example of the problems the fuel can cause.

A rod will bend because enough fuel gets in the cylinder to keep the piston from getting to tdc, on the compression stroke,not because it can't go to the bottom of the stroke. I've heard of antifreeze in the oil, but never gasoline.
 
But are all valves created equal? Today I bought a pair a NAPA cause they were back and looked nice and easy. See pic below. Then I start thinking what if these don't flow enough flue as they are more often used on much smaller motors. That made me wonder if I could create a lean condition or the sled will just not have the power it should. Since I'm heading for the UP tomorrow I went hunting around town for some valves with larger openings and found some silver, metal types I am going to have along.

So what do you guys think? The black plastic ones I have on now don't seem to flow straight through or I can't see right through them as I can on the silver ones I am bringing with. SO Should I try the balck ones or just change them to the one like everyone else has. Can I cause any damage with these black ones? Your thoughts?

SRXBOB; I really doubt that those valves will give you any trouble as far as flow goes (the actual flow into the pumps is tiny). Can you post a NAPA part #, I need to install a set.

Actually, I'm pretty sure this can happen when trailering. All it takes is a leaky needle and seat. When the gas tank is full, it's level is above the carbs, and the carbs are very close to the level of the intake valves..... gravity takes over from there.
This is why the owners manual is very clear about this.
