Fuel Shut Off (full tank trailering)

Yooper, I didn't say it was when the rod goes down...but when there is fuel in the cylinder, and the vehicle sits, what do you think happens to that fuel? Rings don't seal perfectly on any vehicle, and while sitting, any fuel in the cylinder will leak past the ring end gaps and find its way into the cylinders. If you ever have an engine apart try it...you'll be surprised how quickly the fuel will drain through.

JDKRXW, yea, I guess it would be possible when trailering...I should have said "unlikely", since it would take a fair bit of fuel to do this, but if you were trailering long enough there is a definate chance of happening.

oh man. Am i going to need to buy this for mine? i trailer about 60 miles twice a season and 15 miles quite often during the season, and about 3 miles just as often. Is this going to be really important for me?

when you consider the price of the valves and the time it takes to install, just do it . better safe than sorry. if i remember correctly there was a guy on here last year that mucked his motor due to hydro locked condition when he started it, so id say its pretty cheap insurance.

Yamis have an automatic shut-off in the fuel pump, I think. That's why they don't have cut-offs. I installed shut-offs anyway, but never had a problem before. When you hear about Yamablues problem, you'll install them also.

Fuel Shut Off

Here is a picture of the bracket I made to hold my shut off valves

Rider,
Maybe you're right, but I've never heard of a 4 stroke in good condition letting gas push into the crankcase. It will happen on a 2 stroke. It seems like if that much gas enters the combustion chamber, gas in the oil is the least of your worries. Like I said, I installed shutoffs on mine.

Even though it's a remote possibility, its worth the effort, as Yamablue can tell you. He was planning on installing them, but procrastinated.

Yooper-

When a valve and seat fail to contain the fuel, the fuel will go somewhere, anywhere, and it could go into the engine down the cylinder walls. Perhaps it would never happen, but the point is why take the chance. Yamer Incorporated, themselves said that trailer the sled with a full tank was not advisable. So even if there is a fuel pump, perhaps they know that this is a possibility. And should fuel get down there, it will thin the oil and who will know about it??

Or you could install a fuel detection device in your oil, but then changing the oil would be even harder than it already is.

However, if you are always running down hill, then never mind, you will never have to worry about it happening. I go up and down about 100% of the time, where I go in the U.P. but this is rare when you run up there, and I figure maybe YOU ALWAYS GO DOWN HILL.

:D

We agree on the value of installing shut-offs, and the fact that it is a remote possibility that gas will get into the oil. Thanks for the info.

Last season we had a warrior that used oil periodically. We traced it back to using oil sometimes after traillering. So we kept checking the oil after trailering and found the oil to be over full thus gas in the oil.

We installed shut off valves and the problem went away.

We also seen a guy pull a RX1 off a trailer and had a problem starting it. When it finally started it shot flames out the exhaust and ignited the seat which had been saturated with gas from the tail pipes. :ORC

This is why you need to put those shut-offs on yesterday. Imagine all those guys driving around with gas in the oil, and don't know it?? Imagine the guys that are now using oil and it was because the oil got thinned down with gas and will never know this is the reason?? Imagine how many more sleds yamaha will sell because the sled charley is now using is burning oil?? Now go figure out why those shut-offs aren't being installed at the factory.
Draw your own conclusions.
