I was thinking of changing to full synthetic Mobile 1 5-30 at 1000 miles. (04 Shorty) Is this to soon to go full synthetic. Is full synthetic a good idea or should I use the Yamaha semi-synthetic. Would their be any warrantee concerns going to full synthetic..

I am doing exactly that but at closer to 2000
reason
I want to be sure the rings are seated, as that process can slow down or stop with syn lubes. On BMW bikes they tell you 4K miles.

Tork,
My sled came thru with Yamaha Synthetic oil in it. Why would you think they would do that if it hurt break-in? Does the dealer fill the sled with oil or does it come carted from the factory with it's oil alredy in it? Is this really as harmful as people have posted? :?:

Your oil is SEMI synthetic and has enough mineral oil for break-in.
You can continue to use it or switch to full synthetic at 2000 miles.
1000 miles could be OK too, not sure

Tork,
I bought an extra quart. I'll check it tomorrow when I go out to the garage to make sure it's a semi-synthetic. It's too cold to go out with my now with slipper's on!! Ha-Ha. Thnx for the info. By the way, I was born in Presque Ilse, Maine. Still do some sledding up that way.

I am a believer in synthetics, but it's absolutely unnecessary on these motors. I literally have to keep telling myself that (because I’m sold on synthetics). Yamaha had to manufacture softer valves to speed up the break-in time. These motors are good for 100,000 miles in the bike version. Now the bikes don't spend as much time at WOT, (well mine might) at sustained high RPM, but even the ones that do, last a long time! These sleds are capable of much higher mileage life than ever before possible & that’s with dino oil. Synthetic is overkill & can actually harm these motors by using it too soon. Yamaha allowed larger tolerances due to the temperature extremes they are subjected too. 5-10 years down the road, there could be a surplus of these motors running homemade gocarts & modded ATV’s just because the sled is worn out & the motor isn’t. If it makes you feel better, go ahead and use it. ;)!

Give it to 2,000 miles and then you will be good to go. That came right from the Yamaha tech and backed up by Amsoil. That what I did and what I use. I am very happy so far.

You dont need to look it is SEMI
Yeah Ive punched Presque Isle in my GPS and it gives me a choice of Maine or WI.

Another good reason to use the Yamie oil to 2000 miles, is it get you likely thru your warrenty period. If the 1 in 10,000 chance your motor blows, you wont have to listen to any arguement about the oil you used

I'll definitely keep it in until the first oil change. Probably just another way for the dealer to make a few extra $$ as I'm sure it is more expensive then regular oil.

I'm not entirely sold on the idea that synthetic oil can hurt break-in.

Think about this; Drill bits... pour oil on a piece of steel and drill it with a nice new drill bit. Keep drilling and keep pouring on oil. The oil helps keep the temperature down, the bit lasts a LOT longer, and it drills just as well - sometimes even BETTER. The break-in knocks off the lumps and imperfections (like the cutting edge of the drill bit) until everything is nice and smooth. You don't want friction between two smooth things, otherwise you get premature wear and excessive heat/deformation.

Of course, to tell for certain, I would need a fresh motor and some very expensive equipment. Regular oil does meet the engine's lubrication requirements, so it certainly doesn't hurt to stick with the cheap stuff for a while longer.

I agree with snowman269. These motors were built to run on dyno oil. Thats all I'm running. ;)!

I am with you. All my troubles started when I switched to sybthetic at 1700 miles. I won't do that again. ;)!

I don't know about synthetic making any problem's with oil consumption. I use a semi-snythetic in my Cat generator at the house. It seems to run real good. It's just that on the forum alot of people were advising not to use snythetic during break-in.

Stop smoking that crap guys, it'll eat away at your brain matter................ :ORC
Synthetic oil will not hurt these engines, period. The only thing it will do is slightly slow the break in process if it's used too early. I use Amsoil in everything I own and have for 20 years! Here's my current list:
Diesel Lawn Tractor (20 HP air cooled) 15w-40
97 F-150 4x4 10w-30
99 30 FT motorhome (V-10) 10w-30
02 Saturn SC-2 (wifes) 10w-30
01 Saturn SC-2 (daughters) 10w-30
2000 Wolverine quad 0w-40
1993 V-max motorcycle (1200 V-4) 10w-30
Go cart with 6 HP Honda engine 10w-30
Honda Roto Tiller 10w-30
7,000 watt Generator in my shop and the 4,000 watt in the motorhome 15w-40
Last but not least my Warrior 0w-40

I also ran it in the v-6 in my 19 ft. Mariah boat for several years, wifes Turbo Audi for almost 200,000 miles and 03 RX-1.
I also run their 2-smoke oil in my 2 weed wackers, Chain saw and leaf blower.
