There has been a fair amount of questions from those wanting to install a tether switch and here is some instructions on how to install one!

1. Buy a Normally Closed tether switch ($23 used on 1997 and older AC sleds)
2. Remove center section hood and clutch side panel.
3. Drill a pilot hole and then a drill the hole to the correct size for the tether to pass through just to the side and rear of the auxilary plug.
4. Run the wires with the stock wire harness down to the black boot on the clutch side of the sled.
5. There will be a black 2-prong plug with a brown & brown/white wire. You must cut the brown or brown/white wire and connect one end of the tether chord to one side and the other tether chord wire to the other side of the brown/white wire. (Preferably using solder and heat shrink tubing). You may have to lengthen the wires on the tether chord to have enough wire to reach down to the rubber glove.
6. Install tether chord into the panel and tighten the top side with a wrench. Then reinstall the clutch side panel and center hood panel and you're ready to go!

I do have tether chords currently in stock and will continue to stock them through the season.

Here is some finished pics!

08NitroRTX, the tether when pulled shuts off all power completely on the sled.

i just got my teither and it plugged in from yamaha all i had to do was drill the hole for mounting

Great info, however I would check out the Pro Design kill switches, for two reasons. 1. With the rubber style, they tend to wear out and rot over time, leaving your motor shut off in the middle of your race-moto-or ride.
And 2. With the Pro Design, there is no need to drill holes in your purdy Yamaha, they simply bolt right to the handle bars. ;)! The Pro Designs cost alittle more money, but well worth it in the long run. I have been racing quad MX for the last 11 years and wouldn't buy anything else but this style kill switch. Again, great info on wiring in a teather. And no offence on your choice of kill switch. JMO. You can check them out a www.prodesignracing.com

Pro Design makes a nice teather swtich, but the one I bought back in '06 for my Vector did not work because it wasn't "normal closed". The guy I ordered from said it was but it was not. I don't know if I got the wrong one or if a "normal closed" is not available? Anyway, I ended up buying an Arctic Cat '96 ZRT 600 teather, just like Srxspec shows and it worked fine.

Srxspec,
Great post! This should be added to the FAQ's if it hasn't already.

Pro Design does make a nice kill switch, but they are not normally closed and won't work on the Nytro.

For about $35 you can get an Arctic Cat tether (#0638-887, same as the photo above) that will work. For about $100 you can get a handle bar mounted tether from Pingel.

Check with Ullmer for the tether above.

i don't remeber the part number i just said order it the the guys at the dealer and they said yes sir it was 90 buck canadain. its not a normal kill switch it has a relay to.

sorry guys, I guess I'm not understanding what you mean by 'closed' switch?? I just feel that the pro design are a better style, you could also check out Gunnar switches, and Pro Amour, both high quality kill switches. Don't know if they are 'closed', like I said, I'm not understanding.

A "Normally Closed" switch will allow current to pass thru when the tether is in place - it's turned on. When the tether is pulled off the switch is in the "open" state and no current can pass thru it - it's turned off. The Nytro system requires that current passes thru the switch during operation. If you put a normally open switch on a Nytro, it would only operate when the tether is disconnected.

Gunnar makes a normally closed tether switch but Pro Armor does not.

Always made me wonder why you would look for a signal on a safety circuit, rather than have a signal and look for interuptions in that signal, to then determine if power should be removed.

It takes a normally closed switch. All Yamaha 4-strokes take a normally closed switch.
