Just got a 2003 Yamaha Rx1 from a friend of my dads the other day. When I got it the battery was dead, so I went to charge it. I removed the air box, because I was preparing to take off the carbs for cleaning. I went to crank the engine after about 30 mins of the charger being on to make sure it was working. The engine cranked a couple of times and I heard a gurgle of fuel then to my surprise a bunch of gas came spilling out of the hose that connects to the airbox. I am very confused as to why this happened. The sled had no gas in the tank because it was apparently leaking fuel from one of the carbs. the previous owner told me he had trouble starting the engine but when he got it going it ran very well. Anyone experience anything like this? not sure why there was fuel in what looks to be the crank case vent? Just very confused, if someone could shed some light on it it would be appreciated

Sounds like maybe the floats was stuck on one of the carbs... check oil and see if there is fuel in the oil?

When I took the carbs off everything looked to be free moving however the previous owner did say there was a gas leak. Will check oil tonight! Would this have been harmful to the motor?

Replace the o-rings on the main jet nozzles while you have the carbs off; probably 5 bucks each.

x2 on the stuck float.

should not really hurt anything. the inside of that motor will be very clean though!

Good to hear! I'd assume changing the oil is a good idea plus I don't know when that was last done. Will check again for stuck floats but everything seemed to be free moving when I had the carbs apart not to much junk in the bowls either. Fresh premium and hopefully it cranks over easily!
