Decided to clean my air filter and had a little more than a table spoon of gas laying in the air box and the air filter smelled of gas as if gas had been poured on it..Is this normal? what causes this?

Have you been hauling it with the gas turned on? If so try turning off the gas and letting the engine run for a few seconds before shutting it of.

I ran into a simlar issue last night, was going to clean the air filter and found quite a bit of black oil in the botton of the air box. I started cleaning it out and thought maybe there is suposed to be some in there to trap anything that gets in the airbox. It did have a gas smell as well................James

I think I figured it out....I'll tip it up and stand it on the back racks to clean underneth it evey once and a while and it always seems to do it after that DUH!! :o| ...One of those blonde moments

Sorry for the late replay..

You get a little gassy oil in the airbox as well due to Off-camber riding.. It is normal. I usually swap my airfilter every ride (I bought and extra so make it easy) so I have found various levels of oil.. once was as much as 1/2 cup! but then again.. I rode some crazy stuff that day!
