keep in mind I've had my case apart many times, so I am no stranger to inner workings.

Installed new track. My case had a hole in it from the lower gear bolt working loose and spinning against the inside of case cover, repaired cover. Track installed, replace gears etc., everything works fine in the air, but put the old girl on the floor and the reverse grinds. I have pulled it apart 4 times, check schematic dozens of times, install every gear, washer, and etc. accordingly. It appears that the lower outer gear and the outer reverse gear dont completely line up, and grind. The reverse gear only comes in contact with the outer gear about half the thickness of the outer gear.

Also, on the lower gear bolt and spring, I tighten it up until it seats against outer gear and rachet tighten it, should it be tighter?

Any ideas?

and just for $hits and grins, what funtcion does that tiny spring in the reverse gears do, and do you line the both holes up with spring when assembling, print doesn't show? My spring seems to add no function, will not provide any "springy" effect on the gears.

do you have the chain tension right, finger tight an out a 1/4 turn out and the same on the left side adjustment for the reverse.

gears

the shaft in the middle with both idlers on it i would suspect they are on backwards seen this before as i made the mistake once.i had the one for the outsde on the inside and viseversa.

no, gears are put on in the right order. I suspect it is the linkage as the lower outside gear is coming out to far and only makes contact with the upper gear about half way, as it comes out past the little gear to the point that the little gear is only on the lower gear about 3/16 of an inch.

Hi Indy, you will need to adjust the reverse linkage. That is the linkage on the left of the gear case.
I am not sure why but whenever I remove my gear case cove I end having to adjust the reverse.
OH that spring. Let me know if you ever figure out what it does.

spring

I believe that spring keeps the gear centered so it can have equal travel forward or back word depending on rotation if its all the way forward it could grind same if its all the way back. thats my theroy.

When I took that little spring out my slider wear stopped! (kidding). I thought it was to keep the teeth on the two gears lined up while still allowing a bit of play.

Sorry, I should have posted earlier, it was indeed the linkage. I called a couple of oldtimers on the forum and they guided me in the right direction. Its funny, I've had my case apart so many times and never had to adjust the linkage before.
