i have a base model 07 phazer and i believe it has a 18 tooth top gear, it has an ulmer clutch kit to. i am putting a 136'' free ride track on it and was wondering how big of a change it would be to go to a 17 tooth top gear. would i loose a lot of top speed? if it will do 70 on top but have a good low end that would be ideal for me

Call Alan Ulmer. When I ordered my clutch kit from him we talked my current sled and the mods I had planned. He can set you straight. G.B.

i'd say you'll be ok with what you got. just do the clutching & mess with the secondary will be a bigger adjustment than going down 1 gear.

A 17t will run out of clutch ~ 76-77mph GPS @ 11,300 rpm (82-84 speedo)
You will end up with the same drive ratio as I have with 19t in my MTX and I have yet to run out of clutch on normal trail conditions with a 144" freeride. On a plowed road it will fairly quick, but doesn't have the power to get past 80-82 on the speedo on trails.

It will have more low end power though right? 76 mph is plenty for me. I think 17 tooth will be 2.41/1

yes you will have more bottom end.
i went from a 20 to a 17 gear & got my low end power back from going to a 136" track. plus i mainly ride the twistys & don't care about going the fastest across a lake.

Thanks for all the info the track is going on next week, and I think I will go to a 17 tooth gear and try it. I guess it is pretty easy to change back if I don't like it.

I have a 07 MTX with 1.75" X 14.25" X 144" Back Country Track with the 17/41 gearing and see 75 mph on dreameter and I weigh 280 lbs. I also tested with 19/41 and logged same top end result at 75 mph. 19/41 gearing felt much slower on acceleration with less snap to top end. The performance of the lowering gearing on acceleration is night and day different. Also the clutches run much more efficient along with much better belt ware as well. Another bonus is if you find fresh powder the performance will also be better allowing rpm to stay up if clutching is setup properly good luck.
