I just purchased a complete reverse kit and the gear that came with it is a 38 tooth.
I do actually run a 23-40 gearing and planned to go 21-40, but since the gear is 38, then would be 21-38. (ratio would be okay for me).
My question is if this will not stress too much the chain when accounting I'll be at over 300hp this winter.
Am I better order a new 40 tooth 'reverse' gear? or am safe to run the 38?

Might consider going to a 42 bottom gear. Bigger gears, both top and bottom, are always better. With the 42, the teeth on one of the reverse gears has to be ground down slightly.

Okay, 42 teeth seems doable according to you, so I'll investigate in this venue!
