To me there is an info gap in the owners manual and service manual regarding the re-fill portion in the oil change procedure.
It reads,,"Add 1.6 qt to the oil tank, then replace the dip stick".
However, the capacity of the lube system is 2.59 qts [w/o filter].
OK, so we're a quart short at this point.
Do we add it to the cyl head cap ?,,or do we briefly run the engine to absorb the oil tank contents into the engine ,THEN bring it up to level?

Common sense would dictate that you add a quart thru the cyl head cap first, then bring up the level in the tank before starting, then trim it to the proper level...???? Nowhere does it state that!,, or where/when the needed quart is introduced.
facts only please no opinions
thx

put some oil in resevoir tank, run engine, recheck oil level. (also states not to thread dipstick in to check level)

did you get the full amount out of system or just the oil out of the tank? can always measure what you took out.

Agreed the manual should be a bit more clear on this.

One of the best explanation I have found with regards to adding oil to the engine vs. oil tank is here:

Sasquatch said:
Its a dry sump system. The sump does not pump oil to the motor. The sump oil pump is for pumping the oil to the tank only. The oil is pumped from the tank to the motor. Adding oil to the motor does nothing to pressurize the bearings or anything else in the motor. The only time you need to add oil to the motor is after a rebuild.

Now if you want to add oil to the motor go ahead but its pointless! Its the tank that feeds the high pressure oil pump that feeds the motor. Its the sump pump which is a low pressure evacuation pump that feeds the tank. So the oil you add to the motor is just pumped to the tank where you could have added it to begin with.

After draining the oil from the tank, engine, and changing the filter I add about 2L (not sure on the qts, I grew up metric) to the tank. I then run it and adjust accordingly. The engine will shut down if there is not enough oil pressure at idle.

Don't forget to clean the screen in the tank. Take off the lower hose and take the 2 allen screws out. A screen will drop down, it could probably use a cleaning.

Well come to think if it, I only put a bottle and a half so 1.5L then run it and check. Then Fill the rest as needed.

Thanks guys,,,
The manuals are correct and complete afterall!
I had mentally"added" the extra step out of shear habit.
I'm just jumpy regarding dry starts on engines in general.
This one does not fall in that catagory.
Nice tip on the screen thing,,,will do.
